Hi, I live in NZ and there are no MSE providers here, so I'm wondering how feasible it would be to travel overseas to get the treatment. I've done quite a lot of research and have my sights set on Dr Marianna Evans in Pennsylvania. I'm willing to travel and even stay in the states for 3 months in order to get good treatment. Has anyone travelled overseas for MSE? and how do-able is it?
You could also check Dr. Derek Mahony in Sydney.
It does require a few appointments including at least an initial assessment with baseline imaging and digital impressions to order the appliance, the installation after the lab delivers the appliance, and eventually the removal after the 6-month retention phase is complete. Typically there would also be other follow-up appointments in-between to track progress and potentially remove the molar arms. That's assuming nothing goes wrong requiring an emergency visit. It's possible some check ins could be done remotely with pictures or video conference. Some providers might be more flexible than others coordinating with your local dental team. If you are really lucky, they might even be willing to let your local dentist/orthodontist do the initial CBCT and digital impressions, then they could order the MSE and have you fly in for installation and then you could do the rest of the follow-ups and the realignment phase back at home. Probably your local doctor would need to order the special MSE ratchet to remove the TADs, but it doesn't require as much expertise as the installation. I know Dr. Ting in California has mentioned in videos that he has had patients travel to him for MSE treatment. There are probably direct flights from New Zealand to LA, so it might be worth considering him.
thanks so much for your response. Unfortunately, I think my case might require more than just flying over for installation because i already have facial asymmetry and a posterior cross bite, so I have a feeling i might require more consistent monitoring to ensure MSE does not exacerbate this. I've tried researching more about MSE and whether they're be able to fix cross bites, but haven't come across any case studies on this. Would you have any thoughts on this? Thanks!

MSE should give enough expansion to correct a posterior cross bite, but unfortunately the wider side often gets more expansion than the narrow side. Jaw Hacks is a good example of this:
His right side started narrower with a posterior cross bite. MSE expanded the right side enough to correct the cross bite, but it expanded the left side even farther giving him a brodie bite on that side. He's undergoing treatment to correct this but hasn't updated in months. You're right that you want to monitor carefully for this asymmetry during expansion to try and prevent it rather than correcting it afterward. He consulted with Dr. Ting remotely to advise his orthodontist on how to correct it.
@freeza hi, would you mind sharing why you are considering Dr. Evans over anywhere else in the world? I ask because I'm kind of close to her and looked at the website today but it didn't have a ton of info on it. I've been researching who to go with and had 2 consults and still not really sure. I also have a crossbite, asymmetries, and also TMJ and narrow palate.
@vplatt hi there, ah so jealous, wish I lived near her or just anywhere closer to the rest of the world tbh. I've listened to quite a few of her talks and seen the results of some of her cases which are very compelling. Aside from health concerns and improved breathing, i also have aesthetic concerns and read that she focuses on improving facial harmony. Another main reason is because she is dual qualified in orthodontics and periodontics. I think my past orthodontic treatment caused a lot of gum recession, so I'm hoping her knowledge in periodontics will mean treatment that doesn't compromise on gum health.
If you don't mind me asking, who were the 2 other doctors you consulted with?
@vplatt hi! Would you mind doing the same for me, I’m considering Dr.Evans too but am curious who else there is to choose from.
Guys, would like to visit Portugal soon and I need your advice as I'm not sure that I will be able to do everything on my own... Can you help me with it?
By the way, I need to move to Portugal soon and I would like to ask your personal opinion about this service on https://movetocascais.com/ as I have read that they can help me to emigrate to portugal but I'm still not sure whether it's a good option or not. Hope that you will share your thoughts here.
