Which palate expander would you recommend?

I have recently turned 20 years old and been mewing for about 3 months now. I have achieved fairly nice results especially with the jawline and the fullness of the face.

I currently sit at 34mm intermolar width so it is difficult to comfortably fit my tongue on my palate.

I am desperate to get some more width and ideally get it up to 40mm.

I have down some research and it’s between the y plate/3way expander or the active plate schwarz expander. I’m leaning towards the active plate expander because it’s a bit cheaper.

Im looking to achieve more tongue space, improved nasal breathing, slightly broader nose and mouth, more prominent cheekbones and other obvious improvements that everyone would like to improve.

Feel free to share your personal experiences with any of those palate expanders.

Of course I am hoping to get mostly all skeletal change instead of dental, so what rate would you recommend at which I should expand at?

Buying the expander next week so need to be sure I’m getting the right one.

Don't make any decisions based on what I say, but the people on this forum that has used the Y-plate doesn't use the screw expanding forward, although the expansion to the sides of the Y-plate seems to occur further back compared to the active plate, although it seems to me that it could be modified to in that sense have similar expansion as the Y-plate when the front screw isn't used.

The speed of expansion recommended by Mike and John Mew is 1mm/week (4 turns of the screw) which they refer to as semi rapid expansion.

This reasoning is what led me to order the active plate. But again, don't make a decision based on what I say, I don't have any personal experience with expanders (yet). But if you choose to order an expander, it would be interesting to see your progress. Good luck

@kilroy I ended up ordering the y plate expander and it should arrive in around 2 weeks. I’ve just turned 20 so hopefully I can get some good results. I’ll start off doing the 1mm a week and see how it goes from there. I’m currently at 35 IMW and 28 ICW.
I’ll keep you updated

If you need forward growth, you should turn the screw.

 That's why it's there.

@thomas22 does it actually improve forward growth or will it just tip the front teeth forward?

Regarding the front screw, it pushes and tilts the teeth and alveolar forwards but it doesn't cause the facial upswing that is referred to when talking about forward growth.

I’ll measure the gap in my expander. It’s perhaps four or five millimetres so far.

I don’t think your teeth can actually tip. The device may flair them out, but the simple act of eating, or even just keeping your teeth in contact, forces them back into vertical alignment.

@thomas22 how long have you had the expander in for and what rate are you expanding?

@liam1511 Seven months, half turn laterally, quarter turn forward.

@thomas22 Sorry for questions but have you seen many improvements in facial structure?

@thomas22

Very interested in what you're using. Is the Y-plate expander not invasive? Do you need a dentist or doctor to use it?

All I need is forward growth and upswing of the maxilla, does the y-plate expander do that, or is it used more to expand the palate laterally?

I'm curious why it's not mentioned more often in mewing communities. I don't come here often though. Are there any disadvantages to it? Why isn't it used more among this community?

The changes occur too slowly to notice them. I also have a heavy beard. I do expect too see differences when I compare photos, before and after treatment.

I can tell my palate is wider, my tongue fits flat against the roof of my mouth, and my open bite has closed.

I have a vivos mRNA device.

I suspect all palate expanders do roughly the same thing. Be it The DNA Appliance, or the Homeoblock. There's one Homeoblock video that shows dramatic upswing in a patient. Your entire face will become more symmetrical though. Your eyes may shift, for example.

These devices cost between 3k to 9k, I think that's why.

The only disadvantage is treatment time, up to two years, and cost.

I believe the end results will be better than MSE

Are you currently working with a doctor for this? Would you need to use braces or invisalign to straighten teeth afterwards?

You mentioned that your face will change dramatically. Are the doctors able to predict this change accurately before making adjustments to your device?

Cost and treatment time seems okay to me, sounds pretty similar to normal braces. I don't think I'll find a doctor here that does this though (Singapore).

EDIT: Okay, I actually managed to find someone that advertised a protaction face mask and maxillary expander. I've emailed them to ask if they do it for adults too. I don't really know where to ask this question, but you seem pretty knowledgeable about all this stuff. May I ask if you know the difference between MSE and a maxillary expander? It looks like the maxillary expander is not drilled into your upper palate, so it might cause tipping of the molars instead of actual palate expansion, which makes it seem like a dangerous product to use.

Also, do you know if a protraction face mask can be used alone if all you want to achieve is forward growth and upswing?

@mysterecessed

You have to go though one of their licensed providers.

There’s no predicting, other then your bite will be wider, breathing will be easier, and your face will look more symmetrical.

You’ll always look better, and your health will improve. Better sleep, better oxygenation, more nitrogen oxide.

You shouldn’t need braces afterwards. The device creates room for your teeth, but it also pushes them into symmetrical alignment too.

I don’t know where that canard comes from, it doesn’t happen though.

Because you remove the device during the day, your teeth spend eight to ten hours in direct contact. And then there’s eating. The forces involved, keep your teeth in vertical alignment.

Are you using the y plate?

I just got my y palate and going for a semi rapid expansion which is assume is 1 mm per week, how many turns is that per day? I read that you turn 1/4 ever 2-5 days.

another stupid question, but how do you make the 1/4 turn? Like do you barely turn it halfway??? Confused cause I’ve only seen people turning it all the way down until there’s a new hole popping up. I posted a thread about this but this forum seems dead sooo I hope someone in here wakes up

I think usually 1/4 turn actually refers to one quarter of a millimeter, not an actual turn. At least that's the case with my expander. I've measured it and indeed, once you turn it all the way until you can see a new hole, it's turned by about a quarter of a millimeter.
