It turns out ive been mewing wrong the whole time for a long time. When mewing I've only felt it in my upper jaw. This overtime caused my lower jaw to become a little recessed. And my bite to change. It weird cause ive even been to the orthodontist who confirmed it but he said my bite is actually better then before. I told him my teeth have only shifted in the last 2 months and he said that was ridiculous LOL. The thing is I had a palatal exander when i was 12 so my bite was already good to go prior to mewing.
Now onto the reason I registered on this forum. After meeting with the orthodontist I continued doing the dumb wrong mewing crap I was doing until i started getting extreme pain in my upper jaw. Thats when i searched up mewing again and I realized I was doing it wrong. So then I corrected myself. And I saw a change, I started feeling tightness in both my jaws instead of just the upper. But the thing is the upper jaw/ palate pain continued. The pain was so annoying that even touching my tongue to the roof of the mouth hurts.
So I was like scew this and stopped mewing the pain has slowly day by day decreased. But the negative is I noticed my appearance looks worse. I Just look different, nose looks longer, philtrum looks longer, eyes are more sunken in.(I'm not being paraniod) And this is just in 5 days.
So what do you guys suggest do I continue not mewing and see if the pain eventually goes a away or try to push through the pain? The annoying this is my tongue naturally touches the roof of my mouth when sleeping which causes pain and it has slowed down the process. Also whenever I lie down my face and jaws feel heavy especially after I sleep.
I want to eventually mew again, but this whole process has been extremely annoying snd stressful.
Yep, Mewing sucks. It was all just a big ongoing experiment anyway. Here's the origins:

I have been trying unsuccessfully to get disclaimers to protect his viewers. Perhaps we need a change.org?
Here's what I did to try & stop:
Botox in tongue (just kidding)
I tried to not pay attention and over time my tongue seems to have relaxed. For a while. I was super confused on where it should be. I would let my mouth hang open. I had soft foods. I didn't do for long and monitored well thankfully. Yes... I had perfect teeth before starting. I needed no retainers and was going on decade after decade fine. So it is irritating. I decided to squish my cheeks back together a bit. Always fid it light and waited a few days for results. Anyway, my maxilla retruded, too. My nose and philtrum appear to be the same as before Mewing... though myofunctional therapy vidwo of Audrey Yoon had initiated a premature drop in the philtrum for me. Anyway.. the face is still maliable. I had to take time to relax. Got curve of spee (see my icon) but it was minor. I pay rediculous attention to things. Perhaps you chewed with you mouth closed? The philtrum seems to be effected by that. I just basically tried to undo all of Mewing. I was able to improve the TMD I got, too , by relaxing & trying not to Mew. It would freak me out when in the middle of thr night my tongue was pressing on my palate as I slept. This stopped in time. To find my former natural tongue position, I found that talking to others helped. When I talked for a bit then stopped the unconscious position of the tongue (from before) would return. It took time but my tongue was back to normal for me. My maxilla wa retruded and I found a way to advance it... just something different I haven't disclosed here and am reluctant to do so. I feel it is kind of where there are many factors to weigh and I feel it may get others into trouble if shared. You may need a McNamara facemask or hockey mask?
Sorry for your poor experience. 🙁
The pain was so annoying that even touching my tongue to the roof of the mouth hurts.
Can you describe the pain? Is it a sharp shooting pain or a dull achy pain? Is it localized to one spot or generalized over the whole area? Do you experience the same pain when you press in the area with your thumb or fingers rather than your tongue? Does the pain change if you change the position of your jaw (closed bite, open bite, jutting mandible, etc.)? When you met with the orthodontist before the pain started, what kind of work did they do on that visit? Describe how you are "mewing." Do you actively push hard against the palate for extended periods or passively rest the tongue on the palate? Are your teeth clenched together, softly together, slightly parted, etc.? What was wrong with your initial "mewing" technique?
Thanks for replying, I'll answer the questions.
1. Right now its dull achy pain. Initially it was sharp pain, especially when I swallowed.
2. The pain is only in my upper palate. But if i start mewing, i'll feel my teeth tingling and lower jaw and maxilla will feel tight.
3. Yes i feel a little pain but it feels different. I pressed really hard and now i have this wierd dullish pain.
4.no
5. When i met with the orthodontist, he did no work on me, i was concerned so I asked a bunch of questions. I asked him what the proper tongue position was and he said the tip of the tongue should slightly touching behind the front teeth and should not be pressing on anything.
6. I noticed even when i started the new mewing technique I was pressing hard. But the thing is even now if i slightly touch my tongue to my palate it hurts. When i mew my teeth are touching not clenched.
7. How I iinitially mewed was i tucked my chin and sunctioned my tongue to the roof of my mouth. The tip of my tongue was bit further back and wasnt close to my teeth. This created and imense pressure that i could feel only on my upper maxilla. Looking back I was pretty much hard mewing all the time. My technique now is different.. My tongue is more forward placed and there is less pressure on my upper jaw. And for the first time i feel it in both jaws.
So what do you guys suggest I do? The thing is I cant bring this up to my friends or family. I even asked my mom if she thinks i look different and she told me I'm losing it.
Also on a side note I already had a palatal expander when i was 12. So I already had a good bite and jawline prior to mewing.
And one final question is, what is your guys' thoughts on mouth taping, you think it has the potential to make your philtrum longer?
Perhaps you are experiencing some kind of trigeminal neuralgia in the V2 maxillary branch. This would typically be more of a shooting/stabbing pain. I recommend talking with your dentist, orthodontist, or doctor about feeling pain when you posture your tongue on the roof of your mouth. You don't have to go into detail about your experimentation with "mewing."
I very much doubt your appearance changed that much in 5 days. More likely is that your brain has been super-focused on mewing and how it relates to your appearance, so when you stopped mewing your brain went into overdrive looking out for how it would affect your face. And as a result, it's imagining changes.
It should really be noted that there is no way your nose or philtrum can get longer in such a short space of time without some serious external forces acting upon them. Your eyes, however, can get more or less sunken for a variety of reasons, including tiredness and dehydration.
One thing's for sure - if you're experiencing the pain you describe, you should seek advice from a qualified medical professional in case it's something serious (probably not but what have you got to lose by checking?). You're only going to get conjecture on internet forums, not a solid diagnosis.

The philtrum can lengthen rather quickly, depending. I know mine did, but not from Mewing. Don't mess around with it or it can drop fast. 1 mm every 10 years is average... so it may cover teeth when in a rest home.
Its been a while but I'll continue the conversation.
The pain has gotten less but I have not visited a doctor yet.
But on a side note I noticed something pecular. Prior to mewing my mouth never used to fall open when sleeping.(This was one of the indicaters that I was mewing wrong.)After I started mewing my mouth started falling open. So I started taping my mouth shut. Ive been mouth taping for a year and a half like a moron. I noticed my philtrum has gotten longer and my lips are duller.
I dont know what to do. There is no way to shorten a philtrum, other than lip lift. I dont even think im a candidate for that.

Yep - the internet sucks. Nobody is talking about taping making the philtrum longer! Skin vs. bone... +1 for bone -7 for skin. Thank you. I'm so tired of these monkeys pushing taping!!!! And you're right!!!! How are we going to lift our philtrums?! I got mine elongated through a video with Audrey Yoon on myofunctional therapy. Come to find out... myofunctional therapy does a couple of things... it makes our tongues stronger, bigger, fatter, longer (whatever)… and depending on the exercise, can make the philtrums longer. If you want info, message me directly. Now maybe we need to make our tongues stronger... but the truth is... like you mentioned and I've experienced... training the tongue is hard to untrain. Think of this....
Mewing pushed up my maxilla so that there is added strain to the TMD with a slight SKELETAL open bite. I personally (after stopping) would wake up in the middle of the night with my tongue pushing on the roof of my mouth! Yikes. Well... I have a hypothesis for kids that if the jaw is more forward when chewing that it'll come more forward. Although your philtrum is getting longer, how much of your teeth show in photos now vs. compared to before? I know this one can be tricky... because every smile is a little different. This may give an indication of whether the face has shortened or not... (sometimes the maxilla gets jammed up TOO high). Take that, Dr. Mew!
Sounds like you need some comprehensive assessment by a professional. A dentist more heavily focused on this topic typically also treats TMD and looks at airway. A myofunctional therapist could help you get your tongue in the right place. Given the complications you're having I really think you should try to find professionals to help; there's only so much that can be done through self-experimentation and information from the internet.
Consult with someone to see if you would benefit from a labial frenectomy.
Prior to mewing my mouth never used to fall open when sleeping.(This was one of the indicaters that I was mewing wrong.)After I started mewing my mouth started falling open.
Chewing exercises to strengthen the resting tone of the masseters would help balance the force of the tongue separating the jaws.

Per my understanding, this elongates.

I'm not sure, maybe Its because I didn't chew any gum. I'll try chewing more in the future. But thanks for the advice everyone.
Hi guys, I was also wondering what you guys think of this appliance. I used when I was like 12. Do you guys think it negatively effected my appearance.

@darkindigo Quick question - were you able to reverse all mewing effects & have your face go back to how it was prior to you starting mewing?
I ask because I started hard mewing a few weeks back, & accidentally pushed my soft palate UP quite far from hard swallowing. Essentially my tongue forced my palate up and expanded it - I actually felt this happen at the time. Not painful per se, just felt like some bone remodeling going on.
This has caused my nose to appear bigger & wider. I'm curious whether reverting back to my old oral posture would lower my soft palate & bring my face back to how it was. I'm not liking the bigger nose at all!
