Hi guys,

I mew since december 2018.

My problem Is receding gums and my dentist suggested me gum graft surgery a year ago, also because in his opinion I have small maxilla and alveolar bones, eventough my IMW Is 37mm (nice) . So I wonder if It Is due to the tongue thrust I used to have and (moderate) mouthbreathing...

I am quite willing to do It.

@progress' technique described in his post about lip seal is what I am already trying to do as soon as I started mewing...

Do you have any idea how mewing can affect gum recession?

Thank you,

I am sorry again if my grammar is not perfect...

I have not read of people suffering dehiscence as a result of mewing. If your teeth are tipped in where there is recession of the gums, uprighting them may reduce the appearance of recession of the gums. I find Aloe Vera gel to be effective in helping the gums grow back.

It's a smart concern to have, but (in my opinion) tongue posture will not hurt your gums. Something like a hard acrylic expander can push too hard and too long into the gumline and contribute to lack of blood flow and gum recession. It has no "give"

But the tongue will not do this. It's soft, responsive to the tissue it contacts, and subconsciously your body will not allow it to exert constant pressure in a way that damages gums. There is a feedback that you are not consciously aware of between your tongue, your central nervous system, and the roof of your mouth. If you are pushing too hard with too much constant pressure, the body will give your physical discomfort and will back off by itself.

In my opinion, nobody needs to worry about the tongue causing gum recession

I'm actually wondering if healthy open mouth chewing will help REVERSE receding gums.

Oil pulling has done absolute wonders for the health of my gums and the cleanliness of my teeth.

@Odys , makes sense because the most affected teeth are the three tipped in... I already thought about it, as matter of fact It Is a while i am considering to get invisalign

@TGW  thank you , I am not afraid that tongue directly causes It, but the implied outward movement  It promotes, making my teeth pressing towards the outer edge of my small alveolar bone (o.c. i don't touch the teeth while mewing)

I guess I have to expand the very top of my shrinked palate making It more inrversed U shaped instead of like a V making more room for the roots of the teeth and then push them inside. My dentist already suggested surgery, but he didn't clearly edplained why........ "Hello dentist my old friend, I have to talk to you again"

@ 135, thank you It sounds good, and shouldnt have contraindication

Yes, oil pulling cleans your gums in a way brushing can't. And if you want to stop gums receding and hopefully grow them back, then you want to make sure harmful bacteria aren't nestled in there causing damage.

Also, people who mouthbreathe and have an open mouth posture have worse gum recession than natural mewers. Saliva is the natural antiseptic of your mouth, and a dry mouth from mouthbreathing puts your gums in a position to recede. So mewing should help in this way, if your mouth falls open during sleep for example.

I think you really just need to be concerned with hard mewing and tongue chewing, if you do those things. Hard mewing was irritating my teeth and gums until I figured out how to push up with only the posterior half of the tongue (chin tuck is essential).

maxillary deficiency > low nasal passage volume > open mouthed breathing > dry mouth > gum recession

to address gum recession, fix anywhere along this line.  Mewing can push UP into nasal passage.... not a good idea.  Want out.  You'll need a tooth-born and/or skeletal drilled treatment.  Photos?

Also, pin-hole technique I hear is great.

Hi @darklingo,

Yes, I am aware of that knock-on effect. But its trigger were big adenoids in my case... Sigh

I don't know... After some months of mewing I started breathing way better through both nostrils (It was a miracle before). I gently push everywhere as if my tongue was a baloon, not only upward.

Surgery Is demanding and risky...

For my front photos only PMs at the moment

There's nothing to indicate Kyte will "need" a tooth-born and/or skeletal drilled treatment!
