Hello,
I am 22 and I started mewing 1 week ago. I decided to register on this forum in particular because it is updated, well done, and with a good spirit. But let me introduce myself a bit more...
All began when I wondered why I could not naturally close my mouth. Which was the cause? Was it the short upper lip? Recessed chin? It was hard to say, until I found about the long face syndrome, that was the reason of all my problems. When I searched images of people who suffered from this I thought :"Woah! These guys look like me in those photos where I am!".
Yeah right, the photos of course! When I looked at me in front of the mirror I thought to be fine (and even more), but now I decided to embrace my suspects: Psychological mechanisms occur when I see my symmetrical face in front of the mirror, so that my brain, used to that image, is capable of removing imperfections to make me feel better.
Anyways, since that moment I felt so hit by all these things that my thoughts were always about this. It didn't pass very long until I found out what was mewing and all the skepticism about it as a therapy for adults. I believe that mewing works, but I don't know yet in which way.
Theoretically mewing should move maxilla upward and forward (depending probably on the force directions you apply with your tongue), but I have never found a single explicit case of an adult's gummy smile fixed with mewing, or, more generally, an adult's upper lip that changed in relation with upper teeth, covering these more than before. This interests me since, if I could just move my maxilla up together with my upper teeth, I would solve my long face problem, because my jaw could rotate a bit more, and so my chin and lower lip would get fixed, and my upper lip that currently covers 1/4 of my frontal teeth, should improve too, ending all this with a normal resting position.
See you!
Welcome.
Plenty of your experience resonates with me.
The psychological aspect of the brain's ability to hides asymmetry is an less-spoken part of the problem. What has made this problem so severe is that too many people don't realize there is a problem in the first place!
Because the idea of the "norm" which we are all using as a framework is wrong! 95% malocclusion is what Mike Mew has postulated in his seminars - - - 95% of us aren't working properly for one reason or another. And because the "norm" the "baseline" is incorrect, there are so many people whose symptoms get worse and their posture gets worse just out of a lack of awareness/consideration/interest.
I agree with what you say. For many years, especially the years after braces and in the young teens -- I was *absolutely certain* that I was functioning properly. Part of that was because I had been told verbally by doctors that I was fine, or not told things weren't fine.
Even if i was mouth breathing directly onto the hands of the dentists cleaning my teeth every year..still no one said anything, and I just continued lackadaisical saying 'la la la laaa' 'idk why people would mock mouth breathing when that is how we're supposed to breathe. la la la la'
I just got onto a soapbox there for a moment, didn't I? Eesh.
...
Yes we believe, we affirm that mewing in adults changes things. But I appreciate your mindset of saying to yourself that you believe change will occur but that you're just not sure in what specific manner. But consensus seems to be that yes, your maxilla should and will move up -- especially given your age. It is just a matter of noticing the specific manner in which it happens.
Best wishes to your efforts.
