I just turned 18, I found out about mewing June last year and have been trying to implement proper tongue posture since. I am now wondering whether I should see some sort of specialist (myofunctional, FAGGA, ALF, etc.) or get surgery.

  • My imw is ~40mm and hasn't changed (my retainers still fit).
  • My mew indicator line is ~46mm - also hasn't changed.
  • I sometimes snore and sleeping in certain positions cause me to wake up gasping for air as soon as I enter a deep sleep.
  • My jawline is practically non-existent when I exhibit correct head posture.
  • I can feel movement in my ears when I chew
  • I have chubby cheeks (I've been attempting proper swallowing)
  • Daytime tiredness despite having a full night sleep (falling asleep in class)
  • I've never been a mouth-breathed afaik (except during intensive exercise)
  • I breathe during my nose during my sleep (wake up w/o dry lips and lip seal maintained)

Also, possibly unrelated, my hands and feet are almost always cold and sweaty and I sweat excessively during exercise.

I realize the lack of results is probably due to incorrect mewing technique. I am only seeking other methods because I have spent countless hours on this forum trying to mew properly to no avail.

Does anyone have any knowledge of practitioners operating in London or recommendations. I am willing to send pictures via PM but don't really want to post them publicly. I would appreciate any responses and am willing to answer any subsequent questions.

It makes sense that your intermolar width won't change with your retainers. But...have you looked at your head posture? Snoring, daytime sleepiness and intermittent apnea suggest small airways, which co-occur with very forward head carriage. I suggest looking at Mike Mew's videos on the McKenzie chin tuck and abs walk, and try them out. It's just about impossible to mew properly with your head carried ahead of your shoulders, but correcting it makes a lot of difference fast.

As far as mewing with retainers, take a look at my posts in the torus palatinus thread a few weeks ago. They both have the same issue of an inflexible hard palate, so it might have the same solution--which is to move the tongue back, way back, into the soft palate and to sort of forget about the front of the mouth. Try out my directions and see--does doing this with the head back cause you to feel constricted in your breathing? If so, continuing to do it while abs-walking regularly, and going to sleep on your back with your tongue in that position, will expand your airways in just a few months, I think.
