I started mewing probably around 4 months ago while wearing braces in preparation for double jaw surgery. I didn't really go deep into details about mewing back then but I got a habbit of having my tongue on the roof of the mouth, tho without making it wide enough to touch mollars, its tip being at the exact right position nor its root touching the roof. I guess due having braces and doing it incorrectly results were nowhere to be seen. February 10th i had a double jaw surgery. Bite is fixed and looks great now. Before that I had bottom and upper jaws being on the same level. So upper teeth were not in front of the bottom ones neither bottom teeth were in front of the upper ones. Those were on top of eachother. Also I was a mouth breather for very long time ( till 1-2 years ago now 23 ). Many characteristic problems like small maxilla, bad airways, weak cheeckbones etc - all about me. On ~ March 10th i got more into mewing as i did read more about it, watched videos etc. So I started putting whole tongue up starting from root. That was some effort. But in result neck started to look less like nerd neck, more straight, and whole body posture started to seem better. After getting used to putting whole tongue on the roof, recently I corrected myself futher by putting tip of the tongue between the front incisors ( before that i think it was always dropping on upper teeth due lack of space or getting a bit sucked in with the root). Made tongue as wide as possible and pushed. I did feel pressure on the front of the mouth quite well. And it felt like - this is it. Tongue can really expand your maxilla. But there goes the problem. It's only 2 months since surgery took place. I have plates and screws all over my mouth and braces on top of it. So the pressure i put is against the plates and healing bones. Needless to say: that's something probably bad. And listening to my own body - ye, it's bad. As right now i'm waiting for my orthodontist to finish her post op correction. I wear rubber tapes - elastics. And later it will be more of the braces work solely. She said it will be maximum of 6 months more of wearing braces. And then most likely fixed retainers. <...>
Having many problems coming from being a mouth breather for whole life of course makes you want to work hard on mewing. So asking any advice on:" What would you do?" Braces don't really prevent you from mewing which will make it easier to expand maxilla after braces are off as i understood. But what about the plates and screws + mewing action right after surgery? Also retainers. Will it be really bad if those were put let's say only on 4 front teeth? How much does it slow down the mewing progress?
I'd suggest you to correct tongue posture, but definetely not to hard mew (since you just got surgery)
Ye, that's what I also think about it. But of course if there would be an easy way of things going like. Start mewing hard in 3-4 months without having to wait for 6+ or even a year. Also fixed retainers. How hard do they slow the mewing progress. If was decided not get those then how much teeth will get crooked. Example: you take off braces and then do hard mewing for few years then you comeback for retainers ( but most likely braces again ). Or you keep fixed retainers and do hard mewing. Will the retainers remain helping with new maxilla, will it make orthodontic treatment longer etc.
I will soon ask my dentist about all that. But as for many other mewers I think it's very hard to show orthodontists your perspective on things.
Do you really need braces? Are your teeth crooked to the point justifying braces, if so you should tell your orthodontist that you want your braces to apply the forces forward not inwards.
If you wanna try to redpill him with Dr. William Hang videos or the orthotropics channel videos would be great, but I don't know how much inexorable those orthodox orthodondists are.
