Hi everyone. Age 29, male. Searched far and wide for a dentist who believed in adult palate expansion. Eventually did.
Had an upper ALF for 12 months. After this phase was considered complete, I had the ALF taken out and braces fitted.
The "after" photos here are from a few weeks after getting braces fitted.
So essentially here is my progress from expansion alone.
I'm regretful that l I didn't take better pictures or physically take measures like my intermolar width at the start (I knew less than now), but am curious what more experienced eyes think of progress so far anyway.
I find it quite hard to assess how much expansion has occurred skeletal expansion vs tooth movement, etc.
What do you think?
Hi
expansion took place for sure
Your teeth look smaller (some skeletal changes?) and the palate less vaulted.
Do you think your face has shortened?

Good to hear
Regarding smaller teeth, I think that's just the angle of the photo and some tilting. For instance my upper front teeth were originally tilted inwards and biting behind my lower teeth (class 3).
It's hard to tell if much facial change has taken place at this point.
One thing I definitely experienced is a feeling of pressure through my zygomatic arches after most ALF adjustments. It's usually true that where there is pressure, there is movement. So maybe there have been changes. It's so gradual it's hard to tell.
During the first 2/3 of the adjustments, a sizeable diastema between the upper front teeth also opened up within a few days. I took this to mean that expansion was probably happening at the mid-palatal suture rather than just tilting teeth
Yes, diastema may mean that a split occured, but your teeth look smaller to me because expansion provided literally more space between each other.
I won't recommend experimental measures to who is going through an ortho treatment.
I am not sure about that, but I think that a class 3 is charaterized by a long maxilla (vaulted palate) and high gonial angle (long mandible) making your chin to point down.
If dragging the mandible down and back consists in pulling on the ramus and gonial angle reduction you should get chin projection and stronger profile. But probably this Is only possible with surgery expecially of you are 29 . I don't exactly know what your ortho diagnosed
Just ask him how It works and what It will be the haestetical result in your profile (aside the more important functional reason) .
It's your face, there Is nothing bad about asking
interesting, anything about cranial distortions? facial assymetries? that's one of the main marketing point of the ALF appliance if i am not mistaken.
your palate dropped thats good news this will make nose breathing better so there is more space to breathe properly through the nose
