Hi All,

I have a big tongue and was a mouth breather until 23. This resulted in excessive lower jaw growth from my tongue always resting on the bottom of my mouth making it wide and long with a narrow recessed palate. My teeth have never met and I’ve always had open/under bite. My face is very long and my chin sticks out quite a bit. People used to call me Jay Leno.

I’m wonder if anyone has ever had success with such a case through mewing alone? Raising the maxilla up a centimeter would help with the open bite. But bringing the mandible backwards?

The teeth are very crowded in my lower jaw. If I extract the wisdom teeth would my mandible naturally shorten?

Thanks

Mewing allows only some adjustments that take years or several months if you're lucky and dedicated.

Your case seems to be way too complex for this forum given that there are not qualified users. For your sake, find and contact an expert suitable for you.

The only thing that I may tell you, is that is not your tongue being big, but probably your maxilla not  properly developed. In addition I THINK the solution is not pushing the mandible back, but widening the palate and pulling the maxilla up and forward so as the mandible can swing up reducind the gap.

Thanks for your reply, Kyte.

The picture of the third girl with the protruding chin is very interesting. Just by bringing her maxilla forward it looks like her mandible actually moved back a bit.

My posterior face length is fairly short - the Ramus I suppose- and the angle is very high. I wonder if there’s any way to naturally lengthen the ramus so there’s more room to swing.

Fixing an excessively high gonial angle is only possible by surgery. MAYBE a very intense therapy can reduce it. Still, your face could look better with an adequate treatment.

I don't know about the ramus

DON'T   EXTRACT !!!!!!      Anthropological research demonstrates that chewing with the hands and incisors forces the upper and lower arches to coordinate !!!!!!!   Try chewing on a round apple to try to align the forces between upper and lower, while posturing the tongue on the palate.  Try to gain forward growth of the maxilla.

Chewing with the hands?

I’ve been looking at pictures of people with good forward growth and from the side, their front teeth end halfway through the nose. My front teeth barely make it to the start of my nose. This tells me that I could stand to gain even an entire cm of forward growth and look normal.

If such is the case, I wouldn’t need to shorten my mandible but just swing it up significantly. I’d still have a prominent chin but forward facial growth would balance it out I think.

The big question is if 1cm of forward growth even possible for a 34 year old? Maybe I will have to pioneer this journey.
