Got my entire skull mapped - what I found vs what we've theorized

Hey! Okay, it was a two hour long appointment and amazing. The dentist is not Orthotropic based, and does practice traditional, but does understand many important issues regarding palette, airway, and teeth - hence the first patient appointment is two hours long (no cleaning!)

We (forum here and elsewhere) theorized that I:

- Have asymmetry

- Narrow palette

Those are both pretty correct! My skull's airway is narrowed at the front and not too much at the back (zooming into tissue and seeing it is bizarre!)

My palette width is 31.25"

The skull? My entire skull is asymmetrical... it looks a little twisted and happened only in past five years.

When I told this dentist about my procedures (removed k-9, wisdom extraction, braces full for 4.5 years) a look of pity and sighing came out - he knew it wasn't the course he probably would have taken...

We are focusing on oral health, and happily my recession actually improved! I use the Bass toothbrush and oil from Orawelness - it's a clove mix with other things...

He's concerned to widen my palette with a device, because as he's said I've had "a lot of modification"... but he understands.

Afer hearing Dr. Mew on the Q&A, I'm more motivated than ever to just keep pushing up (just keep pushing, just keep pushing) and get a "chewie" - because I do have TMJ, spinal problems, headaches, etc...

He does think maybe it isn't Wild to wonder if my asymmetry is shifting the entire rest of the body - because NO one knows why at my age I've got spinal problems (Degenerative Disc Disease and Bulging Disc) without any accident ever occurring....

Just wanted to give you an update. If you live in Oregon / Washington the dentists name is Dr. Blodgett :)

Hello Yay,

How did you map your entire skull with the soft tissue? What type of scan did you do?

If you start chewing hard gum wouldn't that worsen your tmj?

If I can ask, what is your age?

Thanks

Pretty interesting stuff. Are you just going to focus on the tongue pressure to expand or do you still want a device for that? Do you have trouble doing the tongue posture? I think my jaws are too far back to get and keep the posterior tongue up, I don't get how it's possible to sustain for long periods.

Also, what are these "chewies" that Dr. Mew mentioned? I saw the Q&A, but couldn't find a photo of what they looked like or where you can buy them.

Hi! The scan was state of the art with a machine that went around my head... it mapped everything, and I got x-rays too of all my teeth in addition.

TMJ and gum is challenging, and that's why I backed off but maybe want to try chewies because the side of my mouth with more teeth asymmetry is the side I don't chew on - gum sometimes almost makes me choke! I'm 31 btw ;)

Yes, just focusing on tongue pressure for now - and it is very hard towards the back but the muscles do get stronger - I've got pretty severe downswing and dystrophy so be patient and try... also these are some chewies he might be taking about... I know the biggest point is just to chew and use the teeth :  https://www.amazon.com/Sensory-Motor-Aids/b/ref=dp_bc_4?ie=UTF8&node=10298086011

Thanks Yay, I thought you were younger from the pictures you posted before. I have tmj also and found that I can chew Wrigley's Extra with no problem. Stronger natural gums such as the Turkish and Greek varieties can cause a problem. Can I ask you to find the name of the scan you did? As I would like to research it including if its available in my country.

Probably! I'm going in for my cleaning in a couple days and I am going to ask them about it :) I want to do an overlay of my skull and an actual picture. It's interesting because Dr. Mew isn't sure yet with how to help asymmetrical features and I want to solve them if I can or prevent more damage... also this is weird but I will also soon get my photos from when I was younger and maybe post some pictures so we can see when the changes started happening - to see what may cause the symmetrical problems... and if I hadn't childhood problems really early not. I haven't seen anyone do that yet
