Hello there. Just wanted to introduce myself and say a little about my experience.

I am a 45 year old woman living in London, UK.

I had allergies and sinus issues as a child causing me to mouth breath. My teeth came in crowded and I had 2 top and bottom extracted and braces around 14- 15 years of age. As a young. Adult my posture was always awful, I had headaches and neck aches daily. When I was 30 I was diagnosed with OSA. I wore a night splint for 3 years but this made my bite worse so went for surgery. On the nhs I got a septoplasy, hyoid suspension surgery and laserbon tongue and soft palate. This helped somewhat but I was still habitually bouthbreathing.

I did some research and 5 years ago stumbled upon Mike Mew. I became his patient (his last adult one I think) and was given an ALF to get some expansion. I didn’t expand much- I’m still only 31 IMW, but he felt it was enough to start training my tongue to go up. I wore a night time training appliance for a year and consciously pushed and held my tongue up all day. This felt very uncomfortable and after more research realised I had tongue tie. I had a frenectomy and my tongue is finally up. So right now- I’m in a much better place. My headaches have gone, my posture improved, my face improved, my sleep much improved, my anxiety diminished. I just wanted to give people some hope that things do get better with proper tongue posture. Even if you have a small mouth. It will feel tight but you will get used to that. And even when I was going through all that misery, I still managed to live my life- have an excellent career, a child, a wonderful partner, a social life. And even with what I saw as a glaring deformity, I was still considered attractive . So it’s not all doom and gloom. I’m at the stage now where I’m looking at further treatment for tongue comfort. I’m seeing David cook in London. He’s trying to sell me AGGA which looks great but I can’t justify that expense when I’ve had so much work done already. So I’m looking at another round  of ALF.

Could you elaborate on how your sleep improved? Less time to fall asleep and less sleep needed? Furthermore, did your palate keep expanding when you began applying proper oral posture? Do you find it easy to maintain this posture now? Also, how significant were the improvements in looks? Have others commented on your improved appearance?

Sleep: I started nasal breathing and keeping my tongue in place so the quality of my sleep is so much better. No more OSA (as far as I'm aware). I used to be moderate to severe. my partner says my breathing is really quiet and regular in sleep now. Getting to sleep is a different issue. I've has insomnia since I can remember and then OSA. So many issues surrounding sleep that it's left lasting legacies that are difficult to overcome at my age. I have quite an unhealthy relationship with it. I get anxious about going to bed. I take mirtazapine nightly which helps alot. once I get to sleep, I tend to stay asleep for 8 hours. historically it was 4 or 5 max.

Palate expansion- not much. The ALF moved teeth (molars) which gave the room for my tongue- but they now flared. They are stable though and my bite is fine so no dentist I've seen is worried about that. My whole face seems to have moved forward- I think that's from the push of the back of my tongue. So not the palate itself, but more the jaw seems to have decompressed. So I now have more defined jaw and cheekbones. Still not amazing definition but much improved. My chin has popped out too. it was very recessed and has now come forward. the downside it that as a result, my face looks a but longer, and I have a pointy chin. but I'll take that over no chin!

sorry for all the typos- cat keeps walking across the keyboard! Looks-wise: I look less tired. People have commented that I look well. One person asked if I'd had surgery or botox. People who see me everyday haven't said anything because it's all been so gradual.
