Mewing prevented me from having retainers

20yo, had orthodontic braces because of an "almost surgery-needed openbite" (the official quote was in french), and they told me to wear an upper retainer as much as I can for years and years. 545€, I did not put in ONCE.

We are about 10months afterward, my ortho is happy that my teeth did not move. Ofc I did not put it but I knew from Mew that the tongue was the culprit in every cases where teeth would move to their "bad spots" again. I worked on it; it works perfectly fine.

In conclusion, retainers are expensive af and they tell you to wear them most of your life, when a non-symptomatic healing is free and enough; it also allows my palate to remodel and grow if it wants to. I guess it would have been tough for him to grow/adapt with big retainers on every tooth 12h/24.

Edit: should not be on this topic but, this orthodontic treatment + chewing tough gum at the end of the treatment allowed me to achieve a "perfect occlusion" as told my dentist. I started really far with like 4 teeth touching, the end of the treatment allowed my anterior teeth to come in contact again; and chewing hard gum (or food) was mandatory to finish the work. It connected all my molars in a pleasant way. I now have the most satysfying bite I've ever had AFAIR.

Good you are addressing the underlying problem.  I wouldn’t necessarily exclude retainers, though.  The teeth will shift unpredictably.  Chewing can cause deep bite or even posterior open bite.  Henry Shein has a video of chewing gum in back half to assist in closing an anterior open bite.  I suspect it and tongue retraining could be enough if caught while young.

I can attest to this myself. I haven't worn retainers in 8 months, and my teeth are still straight. Also my upper eyelid exposure on one eye got better, andmy cheeks are more hollow, probably due to proper swallow.

But I need to be more serious about posture and chewing if I wish to see noticeable bone changes.

Nice OP!

I'm getting braces of in two days. I'm getting no retainer at all since I said no.

Fixed upper retainers are fine

Retainers are helpful for a few years.  I quit wearing mine eventually, but my teeth kept  nice.  They would not have if I had been messing with my face/mouth.  I recommend retainers strongly!

From what I read (and experienced) teeth shift is predictable. I think chewing in excess can cause such malocclusion types, if we intrude too much of the posterior or anterior teeth... However my case is more of a chew-deficiency one. My occlusion maxed out by chewing tough Mastic gums.

Otherwise of course I also think that anterior open bites could be cured with tongue retraining, maybe tongue break stretches, and lips retraining. First step to stop producing the problem, second one to put it back it its normal state.

It was faster with the brackets tho (and I didn't know about Mew before treatment).
