Little bit of background info (question at the end):

I was considering getting bracers to fix my crossbite (right side, first three upper molars turned inward). I had bracers from 12 to 14  but I lost my retainer after a couple of weeks of being finished, only to find it one week later behind my bed. By then it wouldn’t fit so I called the orthodontist but they said they couldn’t help me anymore and hung up the phone just like that. Over the years my crossbite slowly returned and I noticed that my mandible was way too far to the right. I read that an unattended crossbite could possibly wear out the jaw joints so I decided I needed to get it fixed.

I decided to inform about getting bracers again. I had a couple of appointments, at a different orthodontics practice this time. Had pictures and scans taken, dental impression made and even a talk with a jaw surgeon. He told me I needed jaw surgery to widen my narrow palate and possibly have some of my wisdom teeth removed. Then the orthodontist told me the whole process, including bracers, would take approximately 2-3 years. I decided I wasn’t up for it yet. At the same time I found out about mewing.

But: The surgeon said some of my wisdom teeth could be removed during the widening surgery (Since in their view they're useless and might have to come out later anyway), but I could also decide to keep them in. I understand the consensus in the mewing community is to always keep them in because removing them might change the structure of the face for the worse.

My question: Since I have a very narrow palate and it is almost impossible for me to properly mew, would there be a downside to getting my palate surgically widened and getting bracers, if they leave the wisdom teeth in? Since, to my understanding, the point of mewing is to widen and move the maxilla upward and this way I would  actually able to properly push upward with my tongue.

Still have a lot of time to think this through since I can only start in Januari 2020 at the earliest due to insurance. Any input would be appreciated!

Getting a second opinion isn't a bad thing.  I personally haven't looked much into unilateral crossbites.  Sometimes ortho labs have good ideas, too.  Here's one possibility that may help with crossbite.  I have no idea what type of crossbite something like this is supposed to help with, ages it works for, amount of distance possible to gain, etc.

orthotech.net has shared this info with me previously.  I haven't looked too much into it, but seems that some torque would be created here.

However, based on what you are describing... could be too far gone.

Hi, you're talking about SARPE surgery, I imagine.     I did some research and the one downside I found is that patients have 40% less bone density in their palate after the SARPE .  Not sure how important that is,or what bone density even is.   Do google medical research on SARPE to see what studies show about consequences.

I haven't seen any other major consequences noted, in contrast to the horrific possible consequence of jaw surgery.

I personally would never lose my wisdom teeth, if you do have a choice to keep them, with or without the SARPE.

You should definitely try it. I know it might be crazy but it is worth it in my opinion. I never really needed braces when I was a kid (I have been super lucky). I do however need a nose job. I know that a lot of people might say that I am being petty but I needed it. It honestly made me really really insecure. After I confirmed my move and a new job position in Seattle I decided to finally look for a clinic that would perform the rhinoplasty. I did some research regarding some of the cosmetic clinics. I am probably gonna settle on this one : https://www.cosmeticsurgeryforyou.com/procedures/rhinoplasty-kirkland-bellevue-seattle/ . I have read some of the reviews from previous patients and it seems like this place is very good. The staff seems very professional, friendly and the prices seem okay. I am hoping that when the pandemic will lift I will be able to actually do it. Wish me luck.
