Hi guys,
I've been hard mewing all day for about 2 and a half weeks now and my results are pretty decent: Face has shortened, skin looks smoother, more prominent cheekbones. However, about 3 days ago I've been experiencing TMJ pain and headaches when I hard mew. Just wondering if this is normal or should I back off a bit.
Thanks
Welcome. Could you describe your
1) mewing technique in detail (whether you focus on anterior/posterior tongue, lateral/forward/upward/backward action, suction vs push, whether or not you forcefully bite jaws together etc)
2) occlusion (class 1/2/3, extracted teeth? asymmetries?)
3) intermolar width measured at first molars
4) location and type of headache
5) other things you do in addition to mewing (chewing, facepulling etc)
6) age, sex, general level of fitness

1) I sunction first, then my whole tongue presses up and is held up.
2) No malocclusion
3) IMW of 42
4) Headache is mostly above the brow and is constant
5) Nothing else but hard mewing
6) 20 y/0 male and am healthy
Do you keep your teeth together or apart?

Apart slightly

Are you pushing forward at all? Is your chin tucked in and neck (and the spine at large) straight? Jamming the maxilla upwards without achieving sufficient forward movement can certainly lead to the kind of problems you are having. The reason for this can be found in either tongue posture itself, or lack of growth elsewhere in the skull (in addition to maxilla). In general the rest of the skull is able to catch up with the maxillary progress you achieve, UNLESS your current posture does not allow for it.
Almost all of the people who have had good results with hard mewing have also been putting considerable effort into straightening out their whole spinal posture from hips to cranium. You will want to get rid of pelvic tilt, hunched shoulders and forward head posture. Basically the state of your hips is reflected in the state of your skull - if your hips are locked into lordosis, certain sutures near the SCM attachment in the base of your skull will not get pulled apart, and you will not achieve the healthy kind of overall cranial expansion that you are going after (I have written more about this at /community/community/main-forum/subtle-clicks-shifts-and-other-sounds-in-the-skull/).
Once the cranial bones are free to shift and grow through the sutural lines, the combined effect is that the cranial bones will move in unison in a manner that should not cause your dental arch to move excessively upwards. Instead, your upper & lower third, in addition to moving forward, will move closer towards the middle third. In this way, the face shouldn't compress upwards, but get more compact towards the horizontal middle line.
If you are able to send me side pic of yourself in PM, I could confirm your current situation further. In any case, take a break from hard tongue posturing and focus on fixing the rest of your posture.
So I'm continuing to hard mew and my jaw doesn't hurt anymore, thankfully. Not sure why the pain has stopped. Maybe my condyles remodeled or my facial bones, I'm not sure tbh. Maybe it's just growing pains. I'll keep u guys updated.

Glad to hear. Was it just pain with no clicking around your TMJ area?
I really shouldn't be jumping back on here, as I've left this site. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT!!!! NOT NORMAL. STOP!!!!!!!! This is what I'm trying to tell everyone to do. We are friggen guinea pigs in Dr. Mew's mind. Let their own family be guinea pigs on each other. I can't deal with this site and the Admins with heads in the sand who champion this kind of nonsense. Thankfully, they haven't deleted my posts, so that is at least showing an openness of information, which is greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, much on this site is an adulteration of even Dr. Mew's teachings. He NEVER said to place pressure on the upper palate that I'm aware. The people here should really take a long hard look in the mirror. By the way, I don't have the answer for how to reverse this. Like I said previously, sure you can make your face shorter... sure you can push your maxilla around. BUT YOUR RAMUS (more vertical portion of your lower jaw) aint gonna shrink. What will happen is your condyles get jammed up high... TMJ / Migranes, etc. Look at what people are reporting right here on this site! And over time with the added pressure and strain... the condyles can start to absolve. So, your choice. Follow REAL medical stuff or this quackery. For a little more perceived beauty, do NOT risk your health. There's a reason why the British Orthodontic Society expelled Dr. Mew. This is it.
I had really hoped to turn this whole discussion around to some of the progressive, new, incredible treatments that are available. Such as the work being done at Stanford Sleep Centre by the brilliant Stanley Lui. Distraction Osteogenesis is used to widen highly arched narrow palates and among inner medical circles has quite a bit of interest and excitement. Here's a brief description:
"This technique is designed to maximize bony expansion over dental expansion, and eliminate the need for more invasive surgically assisted expansion.
"Patients had widening of the nasal floor, reduced nasal resistance and reduced AHI.
"Stanley Lui is brilliant as the surgeon who performs these procedures."
This type of information is very helpful, I'd think. Anyway... Best to all here! I think about you and hope you're well. Please take your health seriously.
I don't have the answers for you. Here's what I've started to do:
- Try not to push tongue up (this can be a very challenging habit to reverse). At times I feel like Ricky Bobby in Talladega nights... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrbUIDlQdJ4 Hahaha In order to get back to "normal" I sometimes try and just speak to others and then after speaking, my tongue kind of goes back to it's more usual positioning.
- Go soft on my diet. I try to not chew gum or anything hard.
- I'm likely going to get a clear retainer as soon as I feel my teeth positioning are a little better. In my case, I have a minor skeletal openbite. This newly occurring inability to keep my teeth together has put strain on certain muscles. This is because they cannot relax as they do when my teeth close naturally. I'm looking at some orthodontic options for treatment now... One orthodontist I saw didn't think it was that bad.. and felt it would be highway robbery to fix. However, they also are getting back on fixing some of the recent changes. I am not too worried in my case, but wanted to be a canary in the coalmine. I've been trying to help people like yourself by sharing my experience.
- TMJ is NOTHING to mess around with. Because of the short amount of time I've been Mewing and because I was really paying close attention... I was able to catch the early aspects of TMJ. Also, CBCT can be useful in assessing it. Basically, watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWtjuwxdiCU to see how the TMJ works in action. I am trying to stay away from splints myself as the TMJ isn't so bad & it can cause dependence. But, I can hear it on one side when opening widely. I may get a very thin custom retainer from an orthodontist to cover over my teeth... but I'm no longer happy with their placement. Prior to starting looking into Dr. Mew's videos, for years I had perfectly aligned and balanced teeth without even wearing a retainer. Now I feel uncomfortable, my teeth have moved, my arc is different. Anyway, I'm not saying all will have the same experience. I cannot comment on others' experiences. All I know is that TMJ is no joke. This is why I was quick to raise an alarm.Takeaways for myself - don't bite down on teeth...
don't wear a bruxism (teeth grinding) device that keeps your teeth way open.
I am avoiding pressure applied to palate and
Ought not to have worried about tongue unless there's a very bad habit to begin.
Just, instead, I'll eat a good, healthy diet.
