What I've learned through my journey and all this is that you either have an eye or you don't. Some people are born with an eye. If someone is not smart enough to get into medical school... they can apply to dental school. It is a bunch of chemistry memorization for the entrance exam... and really... where are they getting those who do sculpting?! The best orthodontists are artists. A perfectionistic orthodontist can get close... but they are still blind. They have to hold onot the rails, such as the smile line or cephalometrics or something to that effect. They just don't have "it". You know what I'm talking about. When you go to a website and it's beautifully designed and it's like... WOW. You know what I'm talking about... when you see someone and you look at their face... and you're mesmorized. That's what I'm talking about. IDENTIFYING BEAUTY CANNOT BE TAUGHT IN SCHOOLS. You either undersand... or you don't. You either have a gifted eye.. an artistic talent... or you lack it. Orthodontic schools need to start filtering on this.
It is an exercise in frustration to be so detailed and intuitive myself. Finding someone who really gets faces is hard. I see SO many kids... SO many.. whose faces look WORSE after orthodontia. The same can be said for Orthotropics. The same can be said for even some of Bill Hang's work. People just don't get it. Maybe we need more women. Even a woman, who was better... did not get it all. A WOMAN understands what a girl's face is supposed to look like. We put more time and attention into appearance. Men put more time and attention into making money. A WOMAN can do better than a man here. Also, a guy with flaire... someone who really understands art. That's what we need. If you have no artistic talent, you really have NO BUSINESS getting into orthodontia.
If I had an orthodontic school, I'd show them different faces and ask which is attractive. If they can't see it from the start, there's no way they'll see it at the end. In fact... many just end up making their patients look like themselves.
