Orthodontic braces that aim to correct overbite by bringing the upper teeth backwards to match the lower teeth are likely to stall the growth of the maxilla or possibly even damage it.
I'm currently undergoing this type of treatment, but working on taking them off early.
What are your thoughts on the possible repercussions of such treatment? Do you agree that trying to fix overbites in such a way will result in facial damage?
Yes it will. Im not gonna give the whole story. But I've been permanently fucked by braces. Now its hard to be alive everyday without wanting to end it.
I can vouch for this, lol. And it makes more sense to me having read Ron Ead's latest blog.
I had braces around 15 or so, mainly for vampire teeth and overbite. I remember using the elastics pulling these teeth backward, and it hurt like hell. I have pictures from before I wore braces where my eyes were more prominent and deep, a feature I liked about myself.
Ronald Ead mentions now in his post the direction of growth in the maxilla may be the most important thing of all. When I smile I can see (I think* this is what its called, I'm not sure) the anterior nasal spine at a light angle downwards, hence my slight gummy smile and not supported eyes. And when I run my thumb across my palate I can definitely feel the front palate descend.
To me its a bit frustrating because I had friends that had braces too for malocclusion but they went to other orthodontists that suggested expanders, and I was never recommended that. Alas, here we are.
