Hey guys, I'm 15 years old and have an overbite. Unfortunately I have discovered mewing too late and got elastics put on my teeth. Do you think that with keeping proper tongue posture and good oral habits I can still do well despite elastics? Thanks

P.S I don't have braces yet, just elastics

I have elastics attached in the top and bottom of my mouth on each side... I guess they're there to pull the jaws to a correct bite... I'm afraid that it can mess up my maxilla and the question is if mewing will make any difference

yeah those elastics will pull back the maxilla they are attached to the bottem back molars and they pull back the whole jaw to correct the overbite

mewing in this case would in my opinion be counteractive so they will hinder the orthodontic progress

so my advice is to just keep everthing in and don't worry and start mewing after treatment

That's what I was considering. Thanks for your answer! One more thing, what about mewing with braces? Should I wait until my whole treatment is done or start mewing as I get braces in the next few months

yeah you should but it won't give a facial and dental affect,  when you have braces it won't change anything only practice on tongue strenght

Elastics pull back the maxilla and are counterproductive. What you need is expansion of your palate and of the distance between your canines. This will allow your mandible to come forward and close the overjet

Please read "Natural Chewing Exercises Prevent Orthodontics, Learn from Bears how to chew".  Please gently, carefully consider trying the apple and carrot chewing exercise. Chewing Apples with incisors help to link upper to lower opposing incisors, synchronize the growth of the maxilla and mandible,  and align the edges of adjacent incisors  to each other, while the forces stimulate growth.  Rotate the carrot on canines and premolars to encourage intercuspation. The carrot intercuspates WITHOUT erupting teeth. The gentle compression prevents vertical growth.   ELASTICS are INFERIOR because they can increase vertical growth. IF YOU CAN FEEL that the chewing exercise is beneficial, then try it.  PLEASE write back to describe which feels better-chewing or elastics, and Why .  Thank YOu.   If the carrots work, please share with your school-maybe your school can become 100% free of ortho. Maybe you can show younger kids at school the exercises, and local orthos can find another source of income .

JUST SAY NO TO ORTHO.

Can I do this during my elastics treatment?

maybe tongue chewing and then only with the back part to the soft palate to creat a strong tongue
