Genetic potential?

One thing I've been thinking about is the idea of genetic potential, which I've seen referenced in writings about orthotropics. To what extent is this achievable in an adult with a significant degree of CFD, let's say in an ideal world with as many appliances and as perfect posture as necessary? Or is the adult face fixed to the point where only a limited degree of improvement is possible? I suspect in my case that bad posture/mouthbreathing as a child was a big cause of CFD, and it sucks to think how I may have looked different otherwise.

But on the other hand, like in this example I don't think the two faces being compared actually have the same genetic potential? The recessed face is not the ideal face just recessed, it's a different face that is also substantially recessed, right?

I think to find your  genetic potential you should look at your grand parents old pictures and look at there bone structure it should give you an idea of what you should of looked like

Hi,

I got the same question. To which extend can a "ruined" face be fixed?

Maybe you will find this my old topic interesting, in particular the answer I got.

/community/community/case-discussions/if-i-ever-had-perfect-posture-i-would-look-awesomegif/

I will never expect to look like that without surgery, but maybe I can get some improvement.

When I was 5-6 y.o. I looked kinda like that.

I'd like to make everyone notice, that in this historical era, an attractive face matches with a functional one.

I do think that EVERYONE born with the genetic potential to grow their face in a functional (and attractive) way, but it is our responsability to make it happen through good posture, habits and diet.

you probably won't look much different with the ideal face. Slightly shorter face, more jaw definition and of course straight teeth.

This morph by Dr mew explains the differences

can tongue alone fully cure CFD in adults? We don't know, time will tell

I think the girl on the right is better. She looks more mature. But its a face morph so...

The only way to find if you ruined your genetic potential is crooked teeth. If you had severely crooked teeth in childhood. You're pretty much screwed up your genetic potential. People who have straight teeth are delusional and claim that they ruined their genetic potential because of mouth breathing. If these people really were mouth breather as a kid then why they never had crooked teeth? Makes zero sense to me.

I was a real mouthbreather as a kid - we had cats and I was allergic to cats.

STILL I grew straight teeth. Crowded, narrow arches, but straight. I attribute this to a lifelong habit of chewing gum.

I still think its impossible. My teeth were straight until I started to breathe thru the mouth and my teeth became crooked in only 1 year. So you can have a narrow palate and still be fully developed to your genetic potential. Your situation is genetic.

I had braces as a kid so I don't know how crooked my teeth would have been otherwise. The braces certainly didn't do much to fix CFD in my case

Well you're lucky. I still had overcrowded teeth and cant afford them. It really breaks confidence. And I think braces+palatal expander would improve my cheekbones, chin. I'm pretty sure my chin is caused by crooked teeth

I am just refuting your implication that people couldn't have been mouthbreathers if they naturally have straight teeth.

And your argument to this? Mouth breathing will ruin your teeth in childhood no matter how straight it is. I have born with naturally straight teeth and they became crooked in such a short time. I have no doubt about it. Examine those who have naturally straight teeth, all of them have a beautiful bone structure. Straight teeth do not create a good-looking face, but a good-looking face will create straight teeth.

Refer to my first post in the thread for my answer to your question.

"Examine those who have naturally straight teeth, all of them have a beautiful bone structure." - Once again, I am living proof that this is not true. I have significant classical CFD and awful nerd neck. I've been told all my life that I have a long face, while clearly nobody else in my family does. I was a big-time mouthbreather growing up because we had cats and I am allergic to cats. Yet my teeth are straight - no orthodontics. Crowded and narrowly arched, but straight and symmetrically crowded (despite my face and skull scoring in the bottom ~5th percentile for symmetry, I'd estimate).

I actually got told I have a "perfect buccal cavity" the other day by someone who had a very intimate relationship with orthodontics growing up. But I know that in accordance with her experiences, she really just pays attention to the straightness of teeth. Go figure.

I don't quite see why you must "still think it's impossible." Mike Mew has talked about how chewing "informs" the growing teeth into a good bite. My whole life I have loved chewing gum. As a kid I would often chew a pack of sugarless gum a day.

It's hard to believe without seeing your side profile tbh. I don't think mouth breathing affected your cheekbones, nose other things etc. Long face isn't always a sign of mouth breathing. You can have long face but still be GL. My thoughts are still same.

I'm the only one I have caught mouthbreathing in my family, and I am the only one with no apparent cheekbones, a long face, recessed chin, and a very hooked/shark nose. Everyone else's nose is perfectly straight. And we all have straight teeth with no orthodontics.

I think you're right in terms of the trends, but there's variation my man. Where are you pulling these hard and fast rules from?

Same here. Mouth breathing ruined my teeth and chin. Also isn't it weird that a minor problem can ruin your whole life? lol. All of these problems could've been solved If we didn't breath wrong. Life is so unfair.
