How to keep the molars together, without clenching (which can cause teeth erosion)?

Actually its not that hard to do, its just sometimes I will involuntarily start clenching because I'm trying to consciously keep them close together.

The answer lies in the tongue.

If you keep your tongue pressed against the roof of the mouth, it acts as a counter pressure. Without actively pushing the lower jaw upwards with the muscles of mastication, the tongue would push the lower jaw downwards actually.

Just try it. Clench, then put the tongue against the roof of your mouth. The harder you press the tongue up, the harder you need to clench to actually have a well ehm...clenching effect.
