Just a random thought about sutures...

Hey all,

So obviously sutures help with the development of our skulls, but they also have a major function in every day life in that they help distribute strain over the skull.

Now I'm not sure how they ultimately reach the equilibrium they do, it's probably some function of the overall geometry involved and deposition of new bone probably starts to decrease as a suture experiences less strain.

So the end result is probably some functional equilibrium when it comes to the distribution of those strains across the skull (that is, if it was a perfect sphere with uniform suture placement, you'd expect each suture to be equally capable of distributing random strains, but because the seams are at specific places and the skull is not uniform, it's some function of suture size / geometry, adjacencies, etc.).

What this means, is that even if we correct our body & tongue postures which is probably the single best thing you can do to get things heading in the right direction, there's likely to be multiple sutures that will have to re-open / adapt to reach some new equilibrium, and nothing says that the sutures that will adapt the quickest will be the ones you want to adapt quickly.

I guess what I'm getting at is: if immediate progress isn't seen, it's not a problem. Other less obvious places might be taking the majority of the strain from the new forces your body is producing, and until they've reached their new optimal state, the gains you desire at the other sutures might be somewhat underwhelming.

Oh, and it occurs to me that certain places might be too robust for their own good due to the previous need to cope with the forces arising from incorrect posture. Those places will probably just act like conduits I guess, forcing the surrounding areas to adapt more instead. I'd hope over the long term they'd ultimately tend in the right direction though (optimistic I know!). Bones seem to be subject to "use it or lose it" as much as everything else in the human body is...

Anyway, just a random thought I thought I'd spew in to the void. From everything I've read from my recent visit to this forum, it's the MSE + FM thread that seems the most promising at this point for accelerated results. It's certainly the direction I'd be tempted to go in if I ever have the free cash to go for a more proactive route to a fixed face... ;-)
