Lower Fixed Retainers

Hello Everyone,

I am brand new to the forum. However, since stumbling upon the forum and watching a multitude of Dr. Mike Mew and Professor Mew’s videos, I’ve compiled a list of questions I believe haven't been explicitly addressed in a single, stand-alone forum post or video (and if they were addressed in passing on a video or forum post, I have yet to find them).

Therefore, in the spirit of making sure these are explicitly addressed, I will break up my questions into multiple, stand-alone forum posts. My question is as follows:

What is the consensus when it comes to lower fixed retainers? Dr. Mew made a video regarding problems with upper fixed retainers and how one may go about phasing them out. Based on my understanding of the video, Dr. Mew recommends a fixed retainer in order to maintain the general alignment while still providing adequate amount of tongue space for you to work on your oral posture and function. Then, after working exceptionally hard to practice all aspects of Mewing subconsciously (not counting the times when you are chewing or talking), you can remove the upper fixed retainer. Is this also the case with lower fixed retainers? Should these be removed as well, or kept in the mouth indefinitely?

Thank you in advance for helping both myself and, more importantly, the community at large improve their facial form and function with your reply to my question.

He did post a video on retainers... and he almost suggested they don't be needed, but not quite.  Here's how it work.  If you had orthodontia YEARS ago before watching Dr. Mew and you never really had any problems at all... it's because you have naturally (without giving focus) balanced your face.  That means... that the tongue and exterior muscles are in a good spot.  If you start Mewing, it can mess that all up.  I guess my point is.. if it's not broke, don't fix it.  That being said... our teeth tend to concave in as we age.  That is how they work.  Maybe Mewing can help that... but it can also throw off our perfectly aligned dentition.  Many people get speed aligners for dentition that tends to crowd over time.  Ex. http://orthotech.net/

Thanks for the reply.

I see. Based on that notion, you would recommend I remove the lower fixed retainer immediately, keep it in indefinitely, or follow a similar approach used for the upper fixed retainers mentioned above?

Do you have any advice regarding this topic, @krollic?
