Ok so, gonna keep things short, not fun, and simple (mostly cuz a crash ate my first attempt and I'm super sleep deprived)!
Ok, I really need some advice on what type of treatment I should seek out...what I should avoid, and just general advice because my mouth and development is a mess.
I am in my early 20s now. I mouth breathed in my youth. I developed TMJ, as well as a open, deep, and cross bite. Some of my teeth are still babies; I'm missing one that never grew in on the bottom. I seem to suffer from some face melt/malocclusion, particularly on one side. Very recessed zygoma, crooked mandible, deviated septum, poor orbital support, severe asymmetry, downward swung maxilla, also a bit of a monkey face (obvious philtrum/nasolabial folds) when I feel particularly bad/stiff-faced. Not sure why. I generally look a bit like death a lot.
I did seek out treatment before I knew about mewing at the dentist and the ortho suggested that I get 7000$ braces as well as a 12000$ jaw surgery which wasn't good. Had to put it off how of fear.
I want to do it in the right way possible, functionality and cosmetically, which begets asking on a place like this. Might go over to more conventional forums too for feedback.
However, the problem is, I'm not sure what my insurance can afford...I'd normally see a prosorthodonist, but from what I have seen I don't believe my insurance pays for something like that. And I need to do this right. My quality of my entire life depends heavily on it on so many levels. So I'm here, wondering where I should start beyond mewing. I need to correct my abnormal development. Should I simply try a dentist and risk that, like many other medical folks under my insurance, they have a contract with a specific orthodonist? Go for something like an orthotropic procedure or appliance? Or is this something I need to hold out for only the best care for, hence saving up and waiting until my late 20s?
I've incorporated some mewing concepts and while it has helped in some areas (particularly breathing and generally preventing my TMJ, I've reached the point in which the bone and malocclusion needs to be addressed--there's too many structural problems, and it also makes my face constantly is tense.
I also have asthma and breathing issues. I ended up finding an ENT, and he immediately deigned that I needed septum repair surgery as well as turbinate reduction--the latter of which feels quite scary and I'm not sure if I need it. Have no idea if I really should go along with this.
There's a strong likelihood of sleep apnea as well. I hear there's a sleep apnea mouthguard that supposedly remodels the airways--but I have no idea if that's a decent start in terms of getting an appliance to fix a small part of the issue.
That's that. Sorry about being verbose; I just am a bit lost. I think I can improve my soft tissues quite a bit with mewing but it seems like I need a more targeted approach ASAP. I won't be young for long and this is a detriment to my everyday life.
