I discovered mewing 1 week ago. After 4 days, my airway felt much more open and I can easily keep the tongue on the upper palate as long as I remember to do it. I can tell my palate is small because after putting my tongue on the roof of my mouth, there are relatively painless marks on the side of the tongue that show they have been in contact with the sides of all of my teeth. I wore my Hawley retainer at night for the first 5 days. I stopped two days ago because I read it prevents expansion. I just tried on my retainer and it no longer fits, because it won't wrap around the upper left molar(s). Is this normal? From what I've read it can take months for people to reach this stage and I'm worried I'm doing something wrong. I got my braces off 9 months ago and have worn a retainer every night since and don't want to lose my straight teeth, but I know if I mew correctly my teeth will remain straight as my skull returns to its normal shape. Thoughts?
I have mewed for 6 months and my Hawley physically cannot be fit over my teeth unless through an act of God. But then again I have expanded laterally a total of 6 mm (38 to 44 first intermolar).
I have lost no straightness and in fact my bite fits better with less of a smile cant. My middle incisors are lining up more and more.
Nobody should need braces. But our bad habits make us need them. Orthodontics as a practice should be made obsolete in my opinion.
Keep up the good work. Expansion can only be good. At times it seems my bite won't fit but then it magically finds its way to fit better as my jaw comes forward more and more.
Hawley retainers shouldn't even be used IMO. If you are that worried get a bonded retainer on the top 4 incisors or bottom 4 (my ortho gave me the bottom 4.
I have not worn my plastic retainer for upper arch for a year and it doesn't fit anymore. Not sure if due to expansion (most likely not) or just from teeth shifting. Teeth are still straight. Not as perfect as they were with retainer, but at least I can mew. No point mewing if you keep everything in the same old place with a retainer.
30 yo, need to expand palate, move maxilla upward and forward, reduce gonial angle.
