17 M, I wore braces a few years ago and have been wearing upper and lower hawley retainers every night. About 1 month into mewing my top teeth have not changed much, but I notice that my lower tooth has relapsed a tiny bit due to crowding. If I do continue to mew and experience relapse, will my teeth eventually re align in a year or so after expansion? Or will mewing and natural expansion not be enough to realign after relapse?
The reason why your teeth are relapsing is because there isn’t enough space in your mandible. The orthodontist did straighten the teeth however its likely your teeth were crammed in to fit. But the teeth are experiencing unbalanced forces because of the lack of speed which means they will twist around to have a bit more room but at the expense of crowding. Expanding your mandible will definitely prevent relapse as it will create space for the teeth. The problem is that the mandible is a lot harder to expand with mewing. My maxilla has widened but my mandible hasnt from mewing and this seems to be the case for a lot of mewers. Perhaps mandible expansion takes many years. But yes with the space the teeth are less likely to be crooked.
