Hey everyone,

I've been thinking about alternatives to chewing gum, since I'm currently in traditional wire braces. Gum sticks to the braces, and it's an absolute nightmare to get it out again. I can imagine I'm not the only one with traditional braces on these boards, so I thought it a good idea to through around some alternatives. Also hoping for some input since I haven't come up with a really good solution yet.

The Jawzrsize is some sort of rubbery / elastic ball that you're supposed to chew on with the incissors. Ive read mixed results. It might work. It doesn't ship to my country though, so I won't be testing it.

Another option would be carrots, or some other form of really hard, low calorie food. However, my orthodontist has warned me about really hard foods breaking off brackets.

Dogs are fed chewing sticks and other solids, to aid in dental development and health. This made me think chewing on sticks of liquorice might be somewhat effective as well. Smaller chance of breaking off any brackets (due to the liquorice sticking out of the mouth, instead of wedging itself between the wire / brackets), although forces with which one would chew are most likely smaller as well.

Anyone else with some solid ideas?

Mew did a video on this like a week ago, you can literally chew anything. But don't chew things that will hurt your teeth. My mother likes to chew on plastic straws you can always do that.

Couldn't find the video unfortunately.

I understand that chewing can be done with anything, just need to find something that doesn't damage the wire or brackets and still provides significant resistance.  I've been eating a lot of steak recently, which works out the muscles quite well. I'm just looking for something extra that doesn't add to caloric intake. Straws don't seem to be enough of a workout, though?

Raw broccoli is something that I might try next.
