Hello fellow Users

I discovered mewing basically 1-2 days ago. I'm currently losing weight, so I started to look up exercises for back and neck posure when I stumbled on "mewing".

Here are some infos about my physical state:

I'm a 19years old male, my height is 1,80 meter and I weight 85kg (88 when I started my diet). I always had problemes with breathing as a kid and because of this my tonsils got removed.

Yesteday I was started to put mewing into my routine and at first I tought I figured it out ( I would try to say the letter N and then when my tongue would reach the the roof of my mouth I would then suck the air out of it so that it would stay naturally. Todays I found out that I was doing it pretty damn wrong and apparently the correct position is basically swallowing and then holding the tongue when it reaches the roof of the mouth. This felt much more "fuller" and evenly spread out and I'm glad that I managed to figure it out on my second day. I still need to hold it myself of course and it gets tiering pretty quick, but hey, it's something. The problem? when I hold my tongue in that position I can't physically breath trough my nose. If I try to force it but when I do the back of my tongue starts to leave the position and can't do both simultaniously. Todays I was training and out of the blue realised that I was constantly breathing trough my mouth, and if I have to be honest I always did when doing any kind of sport as I felt my nose in a constant bottleneck when I tried to breath more heavily and faster trough it. So I decided to jog on the treadmill and only breath trough my nose. It was terrible. I had to force every single breath and by the end of it my nose started to bleed.

On friday I have a dentist appointment and will try to discuss it with her and see what she says. In the meantime I will ask you follow Users: Is this resolvable by practicing mewing or do something more drastic like braces? Of course I'm not looking for medical advice, but feedback is appreciated. I will of course consult with experts before going further.

CBCT may help... see what's going on with the nose.  Are you saying that you're a chronic mouth breather?  If so, do you have anxiety?  That is potentially related... along with other mental health issues.  The prime component is sleep.  A potential visit with ENT or sleep study may help.  There's an excellent post that I made (referencing a fantastic YouTube video): /community/community/main-forum/favorite-eastern-nasal-breathing-exercise/

What's your intermolar width?  http://orthotruth.com/whats-up/january-15th-2019

Do you have a highly arched palate?  Do you have allergies... or common sinus infections?

I honestly would likely consult with an ortho.  True orthos go to school, whereas dentists are not trained for ortho so much.

Thanks for the reply darkindigo.

Usually when I'm in state of rest I breath trough my nose, but when I start to need more oxygen (even fast walking sometimes) I have the urge to switch to mouth breathing. Of course as I said in my first post, jogging is out of the question, it's just too much of a chore. I don't suffer from mental issues nor allergies. For the intermoal width I can't say much as for now since I'm at school and sincerely don't think I can definitly say that I have a highly arched palate. I will try to take a few pics of my palate and try to measure my intermoral widht when I get back from school.

On another note I remeberd that when I was a younger (around 10) both my sister and my twin brother got dental braces, and before doing it they both had to do palate expansion with that special expander-type braces, so I think I will have to do the same.

I will try to book an appointment with an ortho today or tomorrow and will update the post as soon as I have the information you asked me.
