Crossbite and mewing

Good day, I wanted to ask, is it possible to correct crossbite, using only mewing (without any appliances)?

This is photos of my teeth from different angles and lighting conditions:

https://ibb.co/dhiTaL

As you see there is crossbite (right side, Canine teeth) and also asymmetries of the teeth and lips.

I was doing mewing for about 4 months and saw positive results: my tongue now fits on the top of maxilla (between molars), which was a big problem when I started mewing. Also. I’ve noticed that my maxilla is more symmetric: right side was a little bit higher and now it is becoming lower. Seems that I’m going to right direction.

But I’m still worried about crossbite. During mewing teeth should be making contact without clenching. But in my situation (for fixing crossbite) the upper Canine has to “jump” over the lower Canine (not very scientific explanation, but anyway… :) ). And if upper and lower teeth have always be in contact, I’m not sure if mewing can help in fixing crossbite. I mean lower Canine will not let upper Canine to “jump” over it, because teeth are always in contact. And if mewing expands upper palette, it makes me think, that it can worsen crossbite, because upper Canine will begin to push lower Canine to the outside.

So the question is, is it possible at all to fix crossbite doing only mewing? Maybe the teeth (upper and lower) should be apart for achieving this goal? I mean to wait while the upper canine will “jump” over lower Canine. And only then switch to teeth contact without clenching.

What do you think?

Thanks

I have a slight crossbite too, due to my whole upper jaw being more to the left. I just wanted to ask; when you started mewing, was the tip of your tongue not on the incisive papilla, but more to the right, or has it always been on the incisive papill?

When I started mewing, I tried to keep my tongue at the center line of the maxilla. I couldn‘t place the tip exactly on the IP, because it was very hard to keep the tongue between molars. So I kept the tip on the ridge. After 3 months it became easier to place the tip near IP, so I moved it here.

As I understand, the closer tip position to IP,  the greater pressure is being made to molar teeth. So if maxilla is narrow, it is not always possible to place tongue near or on IP.

Also, at the beginning I was noticing pressure traces on the right side of the tongue after mewing. And now – there are not traces.

Did you have improvements on your crossbite after mewing? Or any other improvements? Are you always keeping your teeth together during mewing?

Don't keep teeth together.

Doesn't the mandible grow up to compensate the gap between maxila and mandible? Or this is not possible? I'm afraid to have too big madible in the case I do keep teeth apart :).

Yes, the mandible will ALWAYS follow the maxilla, because as the the midface moves up and forwards, the body MUST maintain priority of the TMJ (i.e. jaw joint).

I worried about this with my lower right canine. It slowly began to move in front of my upper right canine. I just learns to say "screw it" and I ended up chipping a large part of it off haha. It doesn't hurt and doesn't detract from my smile, in fact, I now have a much broader, more attractive smile.

Yes, I know that mandible will follow the maxilla and expand if maxilla grows.

But I had in mind different thing:  will I encounter any deformities of mandible, if my teeth are apart when mewing? Imagine for example, that my lower and upper teeth are apart 4mm when I mew. Will the mandible try to grow up (in vertical direction) to compensate those 4mm in long term? Or this is not possible? I don’t want my mandible to grow in such way, because I would become disproportionate.

I know that people discussed a lot about keeping teeth together OR apart and as I understand there is no final answer yet. My question is more about will I do any damage to my face if I keep teeth apart when mewing (in long term of course)?

If you are moving the maxilla up and forward, your jaw isn't going to become deformed whatsoever because of it. It can only improve. I alternate between teeth together and apart btw

I have gotten improvements from mewing, but not to my crossbite yet. I keep my teeth slightly away from eachother, but not too much.

Keeping teeth together just maintains your current bite since they fit like pieces of a puzzle.

if you didn't wear braces you could  just by moving your jaw slightly week by week towards the center, this is what I did for about  1 year and fixed it almost  completly naturaly, 4 years now after mewing and crossbite its gone. If you had  smthing to straighten teeth don't think its possible +  your teeth will get crooked

@raver I have been mewing for 2 months and my jaw has been slowly aligning itself and my face is more symmetrical. I started sleeping on my left side more too which has helped . Hopefully after 1 year my crossbite will be gone just like yours did
