How does a Palate Expander Work For Forward Growth/High Arch?

As the title states - I am wondering as the expander I have been recommended to get is only for widening - https://www.bracesshop.com/en/active-plates/4/active-plate-schwarz

The main things I want to achieve are forward growth and dropping my high arch a few mm - I mew whenever possible and chew gum for 30 minutes a day and now I am buying an expander in the next week or so, but am curious as to how my maxilla will move forward and my high arch drop just from widening a few mm.

Sorry if this has been covered before, any input will be greatly received.

Thanks

"dropping my high arch a few mm"

I assume this happens naturally, based on the literature from the Palate Expander companies. But I've never seen any actual documentation. There are no quoted figures by how much it falls, and how quickly. I can't see the difference in the after photos either - but the changes may be small enough that they're difficult to see.

They all quote larger airways, and provide numbers for increased volume, so I suppose it's a mute point.

"how my maxilla will move forward"

The saggital screw (forward) on my DNA Appliance is 12mm long. I assume not all of that is usable though, so perhaps there's 8mm to 10mm of forward advancement in the device.

But, that will advance the alveolar ridge on the upper jaw. That doesn't mean you'll see matching growth in the rest of the maxilla though. The whole thing won't shoot forward by a cm.

You will see growth though. Some have speculated that a palate expander will just expand your alveolar ridge. That doesn't appear to be true, judging from the studies and the before and after photos. The devices transmit force throughout your facial complex, up into your Zygos. I don't know if it will get your face to it's maximum genetic potential, what it should have been, but you will see symmetrical forward movement, that corresponds with the growth in your dental ridge.

To one degree or another, you face will get wider, your nose will get slightly broader, and your maxilla will grow forward. You'll also see changes in your mandible as well.

I am afraid that it doesn't advance the alveolar ridge, it proclines teeth (it tilts teeth forward)

To get zygomatic effects the device needs to disarticulate the circummaxillary sutures. In adult patients that is almost never achieved with those devices.

Look at the grey "death mask" in the photo. You'll probably want to click on it to expand it.

Thank you for this - the one I am getting though is just width, not forward as well like the 3 way expander, will that still emit enough force for forward growth?

I also have fixed retention on my front teeth, is that going to be a problem? I am not too fussed about much widening, I want the forward growth and high arch dropping slightly, so am hopeful having fixed retention wouldn't be too much of an issue.

Thanks again.

I don't know.

Bones respond to pressure, with the Homeoblock, Dr. Belfor believes the bite block, the raised plastic feature, on his device provokes facial growth. He says the force your jaw feels, when you bite down, works the way hard food did for earlier man.

When Doctor Singh created the DNA Appliance, he included a similar bite block.

To me, as someone who reads a lot, it makes sense that just the force transmitted through the palate expander would have an effect. It is mimicking your tongue, and it was your tongue that should have guided your growth when you were younger.

Dr. Mew, the elder, has said that keeping your teeth in contact is what generates Maxilla growth though. That appears to be the same argument that Belfor makes. The pressure from biting down is what causes growth.

That settles it - am going to chance my arm. It's about £200 total for me which if it doesn't work while it's money I wouldn't want to waste I would prefer to waste to find out if that makes sense.

Due to COVID-19 I had an follow up appointment at a maxifacial clinic cancelled. I have also done a sleep apnea test but once again the results are delayed. I will take the plunge and order and maybe even keep a journal.

Once last thing - would this work well at night with a chin strap? I'm not 100% sure I mew and keep mouth closed during the night as my fiancee says I snore sometimes, so wondering if that worth a try to ensure mouth in closed and teeth are in contact while wearing it at night.

Thanks

@sergio-oms there’s underlying structural change.

Here's another one. I pulled them from the Homeoblock website.

Sorry I don't know what website you are referring to. Anyway, I see there: 1) a very poor effect; 2) mainly dental proclination 3) optimistically presented results. You are aware that even the tiniest effect is showed in pink, aren't you? Even roots pushed out of the bone.

@cheekbones1983 I don’t recommend using a chin strap as it may have adverse effects on the jaw growth like long term use of CPAP does due to the constant pull on the face. I would just use tape over your mouth at night to help keep it closed.
