I'm 15 years old. I've always been very self-conscious about my jaw. Here is a pic: . I think my chin/jawline is very weak. How much will I benefit from mewing? I think my maxilla is also recessed.

Ce sera forcément bénéfique, surtout que tu as découvert cette pratique jeune. Les changements devraient être assez rapides. Bon courage !

Yes. A very recessed maxilla and down-swung jaw/chin.

Don't fret or get discouraged. You have the luxury of being young and still growing which makes things a lot easier. If you commit to mewing and are very serious about it you would probably see strong results before your 20's (conservative estimate).

What's your inter molar width? It will give us a rough idea of how hard proper tongue posture will be for you. Use a tailors tape to measure.

General rules of mewing:

Tongue on the roof of the mouth, held by a suction hold. Tip of the tongue behind the upper front teeth (ideally).

Proper adult swallow. Instead of sucking food and liquid down with your cheek muscles, you will need to learn how to do a tongue swallow. The tongue swallow pushes against the palate every time you do it with a lot of force. This is the mechanism that is ultimately responsible for expanding your facial growth, you don't have to actively push against the palate all day long.

  • Teeth together, barely apart or very lightly touching with minimal pressure. There shouldn't be any clenching.
  • Lips together, touching with minimal effort.
  • Practice proper bodily posture and learn the mckenzie chin tuck. That means sitting up straight with your shoulders back , your feet on the floor. The head needs to be on top of the spine as often as possible instead of being supported by your back muscles; forward head posture encourages the tongue to fall off the palate and the jaw to open too much which is bad. The purpose of these exercises is to strengthen the muscles that keep your head back and to weaken the ones to hold it forward.
  • You will need to learn proper tongue posture and build up the strength of your jaw and tongue via chewing exercises. (I would recommend buying falim gum on ebay.) Weak jaw muscles means the mandible falls down which means the tongue falls down which means you aren't getting any tongue pressure on your palate which means you get a recessed maxilla and palate. https://www.youtube.com/user/Orthotropics/videos look for tongue and jaw chewing exercises on this channel. I believe that exercising the root of the tongue is probably the most critical and underrated aspect of mewing and makes the journey so much easier. I made a post about it here.

I know you are french but try not to surrender this time, mate.

Thanks for all the info, krollic. I should also clarify that I have braces. To be honest I'm finding it difficult to measure my innermolar width. It's very unprecise, but somewhere in the mid 20s?

I'm not overly familiar with how having braces might interact with mewing so we'll have to ask the other fellas here what they think.

In regards to your IMW, hopefully you are measuring inaccurately or from the wrong teeth because mid twenties is extremely low. 25mm would likely make this very, very difficult for you.

Important note; modern adults (or anyone over the age of 9) tend to have a molar width of 29 to 34mm. Anyone with 35 to 38mm will find it much easier but still very hard to make progressive improvements without any formal therapy, and as a rule of thumb when I finish therapy any one who can maintain 38mm or more without retainers tends to maintain good alignment almost indefinitely, with a minimal effort. During childrens treatment expand to 42mm for a girl and 44mm for a boy, clearly some of this is tipping of the molars. Ancient man had an inter-molar width in the high 40's to low 50's

How much of a struggle is it for your to get your tongue onto your palate, especially near the back? To raise the back of your tongue do a proper tongue swallow or make the "nnn" sound as in "wing"

Do you want to show us a picture of your upper palate alongside a measuring tape or object so we can get a better idea?

Yeah bro, it's definitely inaccurate. I will try to get a good measurement and then let you know. What I don't understand is that I actually had a pretty pronounced chin when I was younger. Here's a pic of me when I was 6. I don't understand what went wrong in the following decade.

Gravity and time.

Imagine a wax figurine slowly dripping down over the years with nothing to prop it up. The worse it gets, the faster the problems exacerbate and the harder it is to fix. Bones may be solid but they are still living tissue and they conform to Wolff's Law.

Looking at your picture as a kid, it's still clear to me that you had at least some level of maxilla recession and general facial underdevelopment. I can't exactly articulate how I know just by looking but it's something you learn to recognize. We are very attuned to facial recognition and awareness.

Like most people, it is likely that you never had proper oral posture to begin with and it was downhill from there.

How long have you been mewing? How have your results been and how old were you when you started doing it?

Started at 23. Now 24.

Tiny changes but certainly noticeable. IMW expanded, maxilla further forward and up, jaw has upswung a bit, along with chin, forehead is less sloped, nose appears smaller and straight (dorsal hump has gone away), eyes appear more hooded and further in etc, wider face.

Why did you get braces? Did you have extractions, if so which teeth?

Jesus Christ, you're 15. So lucky. Jealous of you.

How do you even guys find about mewing and looksmaxing at such a young age?

When I was that age, I was so oblivious to these things, and how my bones influence my physical health and attractiveness, and all..

Must be probably cause you guys are born in the Internet age, and find more easily about these stuff.

I didn't had internet access at home until I was like 17.

And to answer your question, yes, your chin is weak and your side profile overall is also weak

C'est triste, mais t'as raison. Je l'ai trouvé parce que je remarquais toujours que mon menton était faible. Finalement, j'utilisais reddit et quelqu'un m'a dit de commencer à mewing.

I didn't get braces for any particular reason other than it's just what everyone does and my teeth were slightly crooked. I hope it won't affect my mewing.

Would it impede my mewing? I doubt my parents'd let me

edit: I'm trying to do this all day but it's really fatiguing in my jaw. Idk if I'm doing it right, but it constantly feels like something is trying to be swallowed in my throat and saliva is getting caught. How do you do this all the time??

@krollic I don't understand the "suction" thing when eating also.

stand infront of a mirror and have a small amount of water in your mouth and then swallow. if you face moves at all i.e the lips and cheeks distort, then you are doing an infantile swallow which is creating a vacuum with your cheeks to suck food down. this is bad because these forces strengthen your cheeks which makes them puffy and unattractive, as well as your lips which can make teeth grow crookedly. a proper adult swallow is when you use the tongue to carry and pull food back down your throat. when you do it properly, your face shouldn't distort at all when swallowing. It is important because every time you do the adult swallow, the back of the your tongue hits your palate with a strong force. this is the mechanism responsible for driving the maxilla forward and upward.

@krollic: In the pic you posted, why is the IMW measured at third molars instead of first? Got me confused

That’s the first molar. The two teeth before that are called pre-molars.
