I've been mewing pretty much 12-18 hours a day. I've achieved considerable upswing, but no palatal expansion. I have permanent retainers on my bottom 6 and top 6 teeth. Is it possible that my permanent retainers are limiting expansion and should i get them removed? My intermolar width appears to be 38mm or so. I understand that 38mm is considered good, however I feel as though my teeth appear closer to a V than a U.

So, you've acheived upswing despite wearing retainers on the front 6? That's great news! We have a lot of people asking about that--maybe a post on the main forum to let folks know it's possible?

If they are in the way then you might have to. just do tons of cheesy swallows in mirror and hold the posture as much as you can right before it blocks ur airway

but anyway i made expansion i have an starter intermolar width of 31mm and now it's around 37mm i can defenly feel it's a lot wider

Good idea, I myself haven't got any IMW progress despite having good posture for more than half a year and just turned 18 on April. Still, my massters have enlarged, and I think some width has been gained, not much upsiwng though.

Even if your palate lifted... then the IMW may not have changed.  Your bottom teeth are likely trapping it in.   Did you start out Ved?

How do you even concluded that you've achieved upswing? And by that, do you mean, forward growth.

I do an ultra chin tuck and measure the distance from neck to tip of chin, it has increased from ~2-4cm
visual changes as well

Wow are you serious bro upswing is possible without expansion? That question is literally the hot topic at the moment that no one has answered. Do you have any progress pics?

@Daltira, he is not the only person having this experience. It's pretty exciting. Maybe @hiamspoderman would start a Correction Methods thread about their experience so others can find it and chime in.

How old are you? It's pretty important to specify that, since you said you got maxillary upswing.

The purpose of retainers is to keep the teeth in their position right?

That seems counter productive if you want to expand.

@mr-mewing

Do you still have a fixed/bonded permanent retainer behind your top and bottom teeth and mew and gained progress or did you decide to ditch the retainer and mew? I myself am trying to decide whether I should get a permanent retainer and just mew or whether I should just not rely on any form of retainers at all and just risk mewing with possible relapse. If the fixed retainer can possibly prevent mewing, I don't want to get the fixed retainer then and it's so hard to gauge what the right answer to this is as Mike Mew himself has conflicting answers on this as well as different orthodontists and people on this forum and elsewhere all say contradicting things in regards to this question that keeps getting asked.
