I have been mewing or trying to mew for a week. I have diagnosed myself with a different type of "problem face" than the one commonly discussed here. I breath mostly through my nose. My intermolar width is around 45 mm, I used cardboard to make impressions of my teeth. I have a short face rather than a long one, I have broad cheekbones and may have a slightly recessed jaw.
I have the same type of face as the before-picture in the thumbnail of youtuber Meganxrose who says she changed the structure of her face through tongue posture. From what I can tell, her face became longer, cheekbones more protruding forward, her nose longer and thinner and her eyes slightly bigger.
I have come to believe that my own maxilla aswell as Meganxrose's maxilla in the before-picture is slightly tilted inwards causing a shorter face and more deeply seated/smaller eyes aswell as cheeksbones that may be broad towards the sides but flat towards the front of the face. I think this has been caused by habits causing pressure mainly towards the front part of the maxilla which is how i sleep every night, with my jaw clenched and for some reason more force towards the front rather than molar teeth. It has also been my habit to rest only the tip of my tongue against the palate, teeth slightly parted during the day, causing only the front of the maxilla to be supported.
I have been thinking about my tongue posture non-stop for a week, i nearly passed out at work because i was forgetting to breath trying to focus on work and mewing at the same time and even though i have good/decent intermolar width already it has been extremely frustrating and felt unnatural. But today i noticed that resting my tongue against the gum along the inside of the upper dental arch felt very natural and im thinking that this might also provide the necessary support during the day aswell as extra force uppwards when swallowing. I think this is how i used to rest my tongue, it feels familiar. My face changed around 13, it used to be more harmonious even though it's not that bad now either but i have felt that something is slightly not right. I thought puberty caused my genes to express differently but it might have been stress causing my tongue posture and the way in which way i clench my jaw to change. Now that im becoming aware of having more force against the front of the jaw i can remember that i used to clench with my molars, i can remember the feeling of pressing the molars together in anger.
What do you think? Why should it be necessary to force and squeeze the tongue against the palate if resting it against the gum can provide the necessary support?
I also think that maybe some people do this and think they rest the tongue against the palate, it's not easy to differentiate between different sensations caused by sligthly different tongue posture. I noticed that Meganxrose does this habitual smacking sound when she talks that sounds like she's creating suction with the front 1/3 part of the tongue against the palate and if thats her habitual suction i don't see how thats enough to get the back of the tongue up against the actual palate. In addition, that kind of suction with the front part of the tongue whilst the back of the tongue rests against the gum for me creates a palpable feeling of the front of the maxilla, especially where the nose is attached to another bone between the sockets, being pulled downwards. Pushing upwards against the gum in the back and pulling downwards in the front with sucktion would over time "tilt" the maxilla forwards, would it not? Which would explain the changes that has occured in her face.
Sorry for what might be a long and rambling text, im tired and writing on my phone. I dont have it in me to re-read and improve tonight.
