I’ve been trying to figure out how to mew/swallow properly and I think I’ve messed up my airway somehow. I’ve been sucking my tongue up a lot and now it seems to be stuck further down my throat not allowing me to breath properly.. it’s really stressing me out because I don’t know how to undo it and nothing seems to be working. Need help!!

Maybe you stretched out your frenulum/tongue tie. Don't suck your tongue up for a while, perhaps it will tighten up again. If that doesn't work you might try to stretch it really really hard, because that creates microdamage and makes the frenulum produce more collagen which is stiff. I experienced it myself from doing this exercise harshly: put the tip of your tongue behind your upper middle teeth. Now trace a line backwards with the tip of your tongue across your palate.

Stretching the frenulum isn't bad perse, you might even have a tongue tie which can be useful to release, but you might not have enough space for your tongue now. In that case, you need palatal expansion (all directions) first to create more space for the tongue, then you can suck the tongue up again, stretching the frenulum.

Do you have pictures perhaps of your side profile and dental arches? Does your tongue curl down the back of your teeth due to lack of space if you suck it up? I'm curious, because I have an anterior tongue tie release planned, but I'm scared that I don't have enough room for the tongue once it gets more mobile. More mobility means more mobility in all directions I'm afraid.

PS: do you have trouble breathing while awake or only when asleep? How does it feel?

I thought some people actually needed to stretch out (or even surgically alter) their frenulum to allow them to mew properly?  Are you sure that's the problem?

Yes that's true. And mild stretching does...stretch the tissue, make it more mobile. But if you do it too harshly it results in a stiffer frenulum, I experienced this myself: I could put >50% of my tongue against the palate, after the harsh stretches only 25%. After a few days of not stretching it is somewhere in between that 25-50%.

Compare it with overstretching a muscle: you will get stiffer instead of more flexible. Except that the frenulum is a tendon, I think the change is more longlasting. Read more here:

'Myth 6: The scar tissue in the wound bed must be broken down several times per day to prevent excessive scar tissue formation (re-attachment). According to new research, the frenum is a tendon, a type of fascia. (6) Breaking down the scar tissue in the fascial wound bed causes myofibroblasts to lay down a dense collagen network (excessive scar tissue formation). (7) Gentle is better, both physiologically and psychologically.'

PS: read my previous comment about tongue tie release/stretching being good in an ideal situation, but maybe not a good idea or the right timing when you don't have space for the tongue.

Wow...I guess I'll stop stretching my frenulum then?  I opened my mouth as wide as I can and I can only just barely touch my palate, and it seems like my jaw involuntarily closes a little bit when I reach up there with my tongue to test if my frenulum is a problem

I don't know man. I don't know your situation. I am not even sure what's best for myself at this point. ''I opened my mouth as wide as I can and I can only just barely touch my palate'' This sounds normal though.

Self test at 7:00 to check if your tongue might be getting in your throat.

It's a hard decision: stretch or don't stretch? And in my case: anterior tie release or no tie release? It can go both ways: a tie can pull the tongue backwards, narrowing the airway. Some people report a more open airway after release. On the other hand: a mobile tongue in a small mouth can go into the throat even more instead of more forward. Good muscle tone and posture might help, what I'm personally afraid of is sleep as the muscles, including the tongue are paralysed during REM sleep. So having enough space/forward growth is the only non symptomatic solution.

I don’t know if this is a tongue tie or not:
