Should you be using your core to breathe out or the lungs? I use the lungs be default, I'm guessing that's wrong.

Think of it this way: When breathing, your chest should rise outwards, "away" from your body. Your stomach/abdominal area should remain entirely still.
Isn't that chest breathing? I thought diaphragmatic breathing was the way to go where your belly expands outwards on inhale.

That's literally the opposite of what should be happening. As others have said, diaphragmatic breathing is the way to go. You're suggesting a forceful chest breathing.
