Has anyone tried to approach a lab with their dental casts and have an appliance custom made? There is the German website, but it looks like they charge way over price and also they take months to reach Canada. I want to start sooner since school starts in September for me.

I really, really want to try that too!!! BUT the discouraging thing for me, is that I bought one of the German utensils (pretty good) and NO orthodontist in town will work on a piece that they didn't make. I am hoping the labs are more open to that. Why should they care what I do with my mouth?

Orthodontistry/the Dental Industry is largely a racket. This is why the dental appliance you purchase and use yourself costs under $150 to get from a lab but you will be charged $5000+ for "treatment' consisting of turning the screw a few times.

You have a racket/monopoly when you control the entire supply chain. A dental office will not even allow a patient to get and keep their own impressions/scans. They are essentially extorting the public for medical assistance. It's criminal in every sense but the legal.

The German Bshop doesn't ask questions but does say that only medical professionals should purchase - they know what they're doing, and they're charging a heavy premium since they understand that they are the only player in the game. I don't blame them at all, at least thanks to them we have been able to do anything.

So the reason that they care what you do to your own mouth is because it's a multi billion dollar industry and each clinic makes tens of thousands of dollars every year for $20 of clay, plastic, and metal.

I creatively explained my situation in many different ways to many dental offices before I could get one to give me an impression to keep. It took less than 10 minutes and they charged $80. If you wish to get an impression made professionally and locally, PM and I'll tell you what explanation worked for me. I eventually intend to include it into an article

I will be creatively approaching multiple labs as well in North America, but I'm still trying to figure the situation out. The industry is hustling us like suckers, so I'm going to do my best to sucker them into supplying us the materials that we need professionally for cheap. There are tons of dental labs in every country, I have no doubt we can accomplish this.

How were you able to get the mold and appliance and adjust it yourself?

It’s a long time to wait but I was generally pleased with the appliance. I got a upper expander. They sent me a mold and I sent it back, and then received the appliance. It helped give me space and reduced my clenching at night. I am now wearing an ALF but I’d still be using the expander if I wasn’t. It was nice to be able to just pay one cost and adjust myself vs. paying to go to someone. I’d say it is a good option if you lack finances and want something to loosen the sutures, and then be able to compare and contrast oral posture taking in and out.
