Hello, I am a 16 years old guy who first learned about mewing and the importance of keeping correct oral posture on December.Since then I decided to start doing what Dr Mike mew suggest in order to improve my profile and get a more prominent jawline(as I always wondered what is bad about my profile and I couldn't figure why)As I had braced before(no extractions) I decided not to wear my retainer after 20 days months of mewing as Dr Mike mew suggest that it will prevent benefits from oral posture.

Anyway I started this 'journey full of hopes to improve myself aesthetically(mainly my profile)

The first weeks I saw improvements.Keeping my tongue locked on the of the month for the first of the time in my life I noticed many benefits like, wider jaw and face, better cheekbones, better assymetry and of course my profile had improved a bit. Also, I was doing my best to keep proper body posture and I was chewing gums almost everyday

After many weeks since I started mewing I was also experiencing benefits as I my maximal was coming more and more forward. There was some times I felt the benefits had relapsed but after finding my posture balanced again I was back on track. On april I was feelling like my profile had dramatically improved and also I had a wider smile with very slight relapse.

After that, the BIG problems started....I went to my orthodontist appointment to see my teeth and he noticed a slightly relapsed(I had visited him 2 times before and after I started mewing  but in the 1st time he didn't noticed a relapsed. The second I told him I don't wear my retainer and he warned me about relapse)Anyway the 3rd time he said my teeth had relapsed a bit despite all these positive changes I was experiencing and gave me a teeth positioner(an essentially essix retainer to put my teeth back)I wore it and then....I felt it.It was so painfull like it was pressing my upper jaw to narrow it.My orthodontist told me palate width cant change in my age and that positioner only move my teeth(although my teeth was mostly staright)

I came home disappointed as i thought I had failed in keeping oral posture.I wore it for 2 nights. When I woke upI was shocked. My face width hadn't change but my profile had worsened SIGNIFICANTLY.My chin was more back and down and keeping correct oral posture was more difficult.I tried to persuade myself that all this is in my head but I was feeling the changes were so dramatically.I was s oing my best to keep the tongue on the palate when I was sleeping with the positioner(as it has space for the tongue)but I couldn't fight the force of the front teeth pulled back and down. For the the first days I had really low confidence and after some ways of not wearing it at all I was feeling like my profile had come back to The good. For the next month I was constantly wearing my positioner occasionally and I was desperate.I COULDNT FIGURE OUT IF TEETH POSITIONER WAS PREVENTED ME FROM CHANGES.I WAS DESPERATE.I HAD LOST THE MOTIVATION TO MEW BECAUSE I DIDNT KNEW.I SEARCHED THE WEB, I EVEN ASKED DR MEW AND REPLIED WITH A CONFUSING ANSWER(What do you think a positioner does to oral posture?)

After that BECAUSE I thought my progress was LOST or it prevent further growth I decided to not wear my positioner(Essex retainer) regardless what my parents said and what my orthodontist believed.i wanted to improve myself a before it was too late.

And after 120 days of not wearing, here is my current situation, I feel mewing is pointless, I gain no benefits and I can't properly mew.In the last months I was mewing with pressing to much with my tongue in desperation for fasts results.I was experiencing benefits and then the other day it had relapsed.I was feeling like I will never return to the profile I had before the positioner

The reasons I can't mew in my opinion is BECAUSE my maxilla is forward enough but the anterior part rotates down.I can' feel the curvature with my thumb is very bitg and the posterior palate is too up and forward. No matter how hard I try I can't keep my posterior tongue on the palate because it is too forward.i read about some members with a similar problem like me but I can't understand what is the solution.Over time I feel like my profile will look more and more worse as I can't figure gmhow to rotate my maximal to the normal.I am afraid to push forward because I feel like the maximal rotation will be increased.I noticed my nose becoming bigger and longer and this bothers me.My chin is becoming longer as it was before mewing and I feel like my face is becoming longer and longer.I try figure a technique to lower my high arched maximal and fix my posterior problem but I just can't.I feel my genes being destroyed and that my anterior maximal can't get up.Mike mew hadn't done any video about this topic and that is why ask some help and advice. Is there any tricky tongue placement that can help? Also, is it also the ppositioner to blame as I was pushing my posterior palate up(back in the days I wore it) and my anterior was pushed down by the positioner.Any answer is much appreciative.A person in a Facebook craniofacial team told me my anterior posterior problem can't be corrected with mewing and I am worrying.WHAT SHOULLD I DO?CAN IT REALLY NOT BE CORRECTED BY MEWING, WHAT I DID WRONG TO MY ORAL POSTURE THAT CAUSED THIS.I WOULD APPRECIATE A REPLY AND THANK YOU THAT YOY READ MY POST

I'm always skeptical of these kinds of accounts of rapid, obvious changes in facial structure, just because my experience has been much slower and subtler. I don't mean to discredit your story, but I just want to mention that it is easy to convince ourselves that we are seeing changes (good or bad) in the mirror which might not be there if we closely examined standardized before and after photos. That being said, maybe because of your relative youth and the possibility that you started with better tongue space than me you were able to induce changes quickly which regressed quickly once your oral posture relapsed. My advice would be to keep practicing until you get your oral posture and swallowing habits corrected even during sleep. Monitor your intermolar width. Wear your essix retainer at night if your width is narrowing and/or you aren't confident that you keep your tongue in position during sleep. The essix retainers don't occupy the palate, so it shouldn't prevent you from putting your tongue on the roof of your mouth. They will inhibit your tongue from expanding the palate, but they are also a safeguard against narrowing until you are confident in your oral posture. You might consider making an appointment with a myofunctional therapist to clarify if your oral posture is correct and to see what additional exercises they recommend. Most importantly, make a plan that you believe in and stick to it rather than waffling because you think you see changes in the mirror on a day-to-day basis.

Thank you for the advice. What worries me although is that if my intermollar width  has increased then will my retainer revert the changes and the expansion or it just prevent changes? Also, as I mentioned above I have been told by sb in a forum that I have a posterior anterior problem(Idk if mewing  wrong caused  this) and he claimed that regular mewing will not give me a more full face profile.Hia REPLY worried me and from my understandings I think that he mean my posterior palate is too up compared to the anterior.I checked it myself and I noticed the area where hard palate and soft palate are divided are more forward than it used to be and that the back of the tongue can't reach the hard palate. What should I do?Is there anyway to correct this naturally?Should I mew a bit differently?

The essix retainer will inhibit both expansion and narrowing of your arch while you use it. So it is important to accurately monitor your intermolar width. Maybe invest in a caliper. If your tongue posture is good enough that your intermolar width is stable or increasing, then by all means ditch the retainer. However, if it is narrowing then you should use it during sleep to prevent relapse. Once you are confident in your oral posture, you can phase out the retainer (for example using it every other night, then every three nights, then once a week, etc).

Craniofacial dystrophy commonly affects the pitch of the maxilla. Most people with classic elongated features have "clockwise" rotation and require "counter clockwise" remodeling, moving the anterior maxilla superiorly and the posterior maxilla inferiorly. It sounds like your anatomy is consistent with the majority of cases, so I don't see any reason why you would need to reinvent the principles of correct oral posture. Breath exclusively through your nose. Keep you tongue on the roof of your mouth. Keep your lips together and your teeth in light contact. Swallow by pushing your tongue against your palate without engaging facial muscles. Add some chewing and tongue exercises to increase the resting tone of these muscle groups in balance. If you are struggling to understand where your tongue goes, try a push swallow with a "cheesy smile" to get a feel for what it is like to have your posterior tongue engaging your soft palate. Narrow and asymmetric dimensions can mean that the tongue doesn't always fit ideally, but over the course of months to years of committed effort, the bone can adapt to fit the tongue.

Now I understand but I have some more questions regardless this

1)before 20 days my orthodontists said I had a slight relapse in the left of my palate and said that the other right is perfect(no relapse).Although I haven't noticed a narrowing on the palate. Is it possible to gain benefits from mewing but still have a slight relapse?

Also because of not wearing my as six retainer my orthodontist suggested to put me an upper fixed retainer so as my relapse not to get worse. Will the fixed retainer prevent expansion and will I be able to rotate my maxilla counterclockwise or it will be a problem?

Also I am afraid to wear my es six retainer before putting a fixed one because of the  fear that any expansion I have gained will get LOST?What do you suggest me?

It sounds like you are having some crowding issues return after your braces came off which suggests that your tongue posture isn't optimal. If this is the case, it is more likely that your intermolar width is narrowing rather than increasing. You can measure the intermolar width of the essix retainer and compare it to the current intermolar width in your mouth. If the intermolar width in your mouth is smaller or the same as the intermolar width of the retainer then using the retainer won't cause you to lose progress. It will just prevent you from making or losing transverse expansion progress until you master correct tongue posture. The fixed retainer will only be bonded to your front teeth so it will prevent crowding, but it won't lock your molars in place so you could still get some increase or decrease in your intermolar width. It also doesn't occupy your palate so it won't prevent upward/forward/rotational remodeling of the maxilla. You might find this video from Dr. Mew about retainers helpful:

I am so happy to hear that a fixed retainer wont prevent expansion or a better rotation of the maxilla. In fact i have seen this video from Mike mew but there is another video suggesting that there might be some problems with upper fixed retainers. Also one day John mew replied in a question i made about the fixed retainers in acraniofacial team on facebook saying that they inhibit oral posture improvement.I assume the truth is somewhere between.Anyway i will wear the fixed retainer today and  i will do my best to keep a great oral posture. Also, since i stopped wearing my essix retainer i occasionally try and test my maxilla width with my fingers to see if any expansion has been made.I used to have difficulty to put 2 fingers in ma maxilla  as it was very narrow(36mm from essix retainer i had measured) but now they stuck more easily suggesting an expansion. The bad thing is that i have losst my essix retainer and i cant see how it fits in my mouth but i decided to wear a fixed retainer and keep the best oral posture as possible to improve myself.

ALSO, in a forum sb suggested when sb mew he should contract the palatoglossus muscles in order to have less vaulted maxilla and a short gonial  arch and not a downward tilted maxillas.I do these for 3 days and my maxilla rotation has been improved.

How is your neck and head posture? Perhaps you'll find more success when mewing with your neck held as far back as you can and your head tilted slightly downward

To be clear, an upper fixed retainer will hold in place teeth on either side of your midpalatal suture, so it could hamper expansion, especially in the anterior part of the arch. However, the wire won't attach to your molars so there is still the possibility for some posterior expansion or narrowing of the intermolar width depending on your oral posture. Your intercanine width will be bound by the retainer, but this could still allow you to achieve a more roman curve to your arch with the fixed retainer in place. Ultimately, you'll want to remove the fixed retainer to get the most out of your oral posture, but you should probably wait until your orthodontic work has stabilized.

I just have my fixed retainer for 4 days and i can say there are no problems. The good thing is that my orthodontist managed to treat my slight relapse with ropes without having to wear my positioner  and after that he put me a titanium fixed retainer.I ve been doing the pallatoglossus technique for 5 days i can say i noticed a slight improvement like my mandible is not so back in the neck.Although I have some other questions regardless mewing that i would appreciate if you could answer.Sorry for asking alot of things but i promise these are my last questions.

1)If we ideally want the anterior palate to swing up and posterior palate to come down in order to have a shorter and more horizontal attractive face then why Mike mew suggest we push with the posterior tongue up.Wouldnt this causes the opposite effect?(a high arched maxilla)or the mechanism work differentelly?(if yes plz explain why)

2)i have heard multiple times about the correct swallowing and i think i have become to get accustomed to it but what about chewing? How should i chew hard food?Should i use any facial muscle?,open mouth or it doesnt matter?

3)Can we say that the position of the maxilla affects the puitary gland and as well as the hormones our body produces such as testeterone and Dht or we there is no proof to it?

4)The last one is sth that make me to worrie a bit. When i was doing the pallatoglossus teqhnique in some cases i felt my ears suddenly started to blocked and my hearing ability be like the same as when i am in a high altitube such as a mountain. After a while it got away but it came after a while when i open my mouth. What should i do.Now i contract my pallatoglossus but  not as excessivelly as before and my ears are ok but i worry if did damage to myself. Also in a craniofacial group on facebook peopel didnt agreed with pallatoglossus technique sauying lookism forun is full of lies. What is your opinion?

You are starting to get into nuanced questions which no one has definitive answers to. Beyond the basic tropic premise principles (exclusive nasal breathing, lips together, tongue on roof of mouth, teeth in light contact), subtle variations in technique depend on your own current structure and what works best for you. Getting the posterior third of the tongue up against your soft palate is important for intermolar width and correct swallowing technique. Generally the goal is to shift the whole maxilla up and forward but most people also require a degree of rotational change with the anterior maxilla moving up more than the posterior maxilla. Chewing is important to increase the resting tone of your masseters in balance with the increased resting tone of your tongue so that your jaws stay together as your tongue pushes against your palate. The merits of opening or closing your mouth during chewing are up for debate. I do some of both. You'll have to experiment and see what feels right for you. The pituitary gland is nestled in the sella turcica (meaning turkish saddle) which is part of the sphenoid bone. So some people theorize that adjusting the position of the bones around the pituitary could impact the hormones it releases or could also impact the communication down the stalk from the hypothalamus to the pituitary. For example in extreme cases the stalk can become severed causing severe hormonal imbalances. The pituitary doesn't make testosterone or DHT, but GnRH from the hypothalamus stimulates release of LH and FSH from the pituitary which regulates testosterone production and binding. So, yes there could be some impact from realigning the skeletal structure around the pituitary, but I don't know if there is any evidence supporting this theory. It is common to hear pops or changes in pressure in your Eustachian tubes from adjusting your cranial bones. It can be a sign of progress.
