Do I need to mew differently with a high-arched palate?

Hello!

I have a very high-arched palate, about 1 inch between the bottom of my two top front teeth and the roof of my mouth, and it is also pretty narrow, and I am struggling to get tongue posture just right. (I had conventional braces for one year with no extractions and I think it made my palate narrower, and maybe taller.)

Is the most important thing to get the edges of my tongue on the papilla incisiva and alveolar ridge, and then swallow correctly? I cannot get most of my tongue, especially the front third, to touch the roof of my mouth at all if I hold the position described on the main website article.

Thank you so much!

Watch the orthotropics videos, and then myofunctional exercise videos. Yeah, you'd do it the same, just your tongue will most likely be pressed hard up against the sides of your teeth. Place the tip of your tongue along that frontal ridge that keeps getting mentioned, and then the rest of the tongue as fully on the palate as you can get it. To get the back all the way on you will need to work out your submental muscles, so you should feel some pain there, but work through that pain, or go in periods of pushing until there is some uncomfortableness,  but when resting, it should be on the palate and out of the airway. If you're doing it right, you should feel light pressure and sometimes pain in your midface when pushing hard with your tongue (maybe just for me). Keep it symmetrical as possible, sometime my tongue wants to push more on that side, but I try to follow that up with equal pressure for the same time interval on the other side. And then even pressure all throughout the palate.

This is kind of an unrelated question, but do you also have a high nasal bone?

I have found out since making this thread that I have a moderate tongue tie

@Silver My palate is the same. How's it been going for you?

@greekgodbrody

I've made a lot of progress since that post! It turned out that I did have a tongue tie and after getting it released, I realized that there was no way I could have been mewing correctly before. My dentist's litmus test for mobility was to have me hold my jaw all the way open and see if I could touch the tip of my tongue to the incisive papilla. (I would do that in the mirror so you can see if you're unwittingly closing your jaw a fraction to do so. It should remain completely open and still.) The procedure itself is totally painless if done with a laser and I got a ton of benefits from it alone, instantly.

I'm glad you found that! I was just going to say, lots of suction!
