So I am 18 years old (halfway through braces, I have a complicated case to paraphrase what the orthodontist said). I had a palatal expander for a while and my jaw alignment (or whatever it's called) is kinda asymmetrical. I figured I'd try to actively fix the problem and discovered mewing. I haven't been able to do it until now (discovered mewing a few months ago) due to having a metal wire on the roof of my mouth that cut my tongue when I tried to mew then, but it was removed and I reattempted today. I did the smile technique where you smile really big, then swallow to push the air out of your mouth and create a partial vacuum that pushes the tongue into correct posture. However, when I did this, I found that it was very hard to breathe, and I was constantly yawning, making it really hard to actually mew. Am I doing it wrong? How do I fix this?
If you can't breathe don't posture the tongue anterior ly. Excessive Yawning can be related to under oxygenation. May not be the case but just saying. You'll be under oxygenated regardless if you cant accommodate the back of tongue. Don't force it, it usually ends up with gengival recession and too much pressure on the teeth.
I'd just go for a biobloc, you're 18. Change will come fast and it's worth so it. Get a few mm expanded and than you can get the true benefits of mewing.
Just focus on the tip of the tongueaand try to accommodate it in a way you can efficiently nose breathe and the tip is promoting saggital forces.
If your tongue grew too much for your palate don't mew.
