Hi there. My jaw and tongue tend to drop at sleeping and this affects my progression negatively. I am also right side sleeper. Will doing mewing only day time improve my sleep apnea or is there something I can do about it? (I can switch sleeping position if it is needed)

What works for me is sleeping on my back in a chin tuck position so my tongue naturally is sucked up on the palate and makes my lip seal natural

How are you currently treating your sleep apnea?

Hello Darkindigo!! I saw your this comment(given below) and i didn't get it, you think mewing is wrong and it causes tmj issues and we shouldn't do it and by mewing i mean just putting your tongue on the roof of the mouth and swallowing correctly. Thank you also if you can contact me please do [email protected]

....

I really shouldn't be jumping back on here, as I've left this site.  THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT!!!! NOT NORMAL.  STOP!!!!!!!!  This is what I'm trying to tell everyone to do.  We are friggen guinea pigs in Dr. Mew's mind.  Let their own family be guinea pigs on each other.  I can't deal with this site and the Admins with heads in the sand who champion this kind of nonsense.  Thankfully, they haven't deleted my posts, so that is at least showing an openness of information, which is greatly appreciated.  Unfortunately, much on this site is an adulteration of even Dr. Mew's teachings.  He NEVER said to place pressure on the upper palate that I'm aware.  The people here should really take a long hard look in the mirror.  By the way, I don't have the answer for how to reverse this.  Like I said previously, sure you can make your face shorter... sure you can push your maxilla around.  BUT YOUR RAMUS (more vertical portion of your lower jaw) aint gonna shrink.  What will happen is your condyles get jammed up high... TMJ / Migranes, etc.  Look at what people are reporting right here on this site!  And over time with the added pressure and strain... the condyles can start to absolve.  So, your choice.  Follow REAL medical stuff or this quackery.  For a little more perceived beauty, do NOT risk your health.  There's a reason why the British Orthodontic Society expelled Dr. Mew.  This is it.

I had really hoped to turn this whole discussion around to some of the progressive, new, incredible treatments that are available.  Such as the work being done at Stanford Sleep Centre by the brilliant Stanley Lui.  Distraction Osteogenesis is used to widen highly arched narrow palates and among inner medical circles has quite a bit of interest and excitement.  Here's a brief description:

"This technique is designed to maximize bony expansion over dental expansion, and eliminate the need for more invasive surgically assisted expansion.

"Patients had widening of the nasal floor, reduced nasal resistance and reduced AHI.

"Stanley Lui is brilliant as the surgeon who performs these procedures."

This type of information is very helpful, I'd think.  Anyway... Best to all here!  I think about you and hope you're well.  Please take your health seriously.

I don't have the answers for you.   Here's what I've started to do:

- Try not to push tongue up (this can be a very challenging habit to reverse).  At times I feel like Ricky Bobby in Talladega nights...   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrbUIDlQdJ4    Hahaha  In order to get back to "normal" I sometimes try and just speak to others and then after speaking, my tongue kind of goes back to it's more usual positioning.
- Go soft on my diet.  I try to not chew gum or anything hard.
- I'm likely going to get a clear retainer as soon as I feel my teeth positioning are a little better.  In my case, I have a minor skeletal openbite.  This newly occurring inability to keep my teeth together has put strain on certain muscles.  This is because they cannot relax as they do when my teeth close naturally.  I'm looking at some orthodontic options for treatment now...  One orthodontist I saw didn't think it was that bad.. and felt it would be highway robbery to fix.  However, they also are getting back on fixing some of the recent changes.  I am not too worried in my case, but wanted to be a canary in the coalmine.  I've been trying to help people like yourself by sharing my experience.
- TMJ is NOTHING to mess around with.  Because of the short amount of time I've been Mewing and because I was really paying close attention... I was able to catch the early aspects of TMJ.  Also, CBCT can be useful in assessing it.  Basically, watch   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWtjuwxdiCU  to see how the TMJ works in action.  I am trying to stay away from splints myself as the TMJ isn't so bad & it can cause dependence.  But, I can hear it on one side when opening widely.  I may get a very thin custom retainer from an orthodontist to cover over my teeth... but I'm no longer happy with their placement.  Prior to starting looking into Dr. Mew's videos, for years I had perfectly aligned and balanced teeth without even wearing a retainer.  Now I feel uncomfortable, my teeth have moved, my arc is different.  Anyway, I'm not saying all will have the same experience.  I cannot comment on others' experiences.  All I know is that TMJ is no joke.  This is why I was quick to raise an alarm.

Takeaways for myself - don't bite down on teeth...
don't wear a bruxism (teeth grinding) device that keeps your teeth way open.
I am avoiding pressure applied to palate and
Ought not to have worried about tongue unless there's a very bad habit to begin.
Just, instead, I'll eat a good, healthy diet.

People who had bad experiences hard mewed which Dr Mew never supported. This is horrendous advice for people who are recessed, if you are recessed you should get treatment and/or fix your head and oral posture. Being recessed can have long lasting health consequences (constricted airway, muscle imbalances, neck strain, etc.). Simply getting your palate expanded will not fix the problem, especially if you have bad posture and swallowing in which case you're palate will slowly get narrower, maybe not to the same degree as before your palate was expanded, nevertheless you'll start to backtrack UNLESS you fix the underlying issue. Honestly, I'm not sure what darkindigo is suggesting, mewing doesn't have to involve hard mewing, as you said @hamiddkhnn mewing is just tongue on the roof of the mouth and swallowing correctly, hard mewing is a method to get the tongue pushing on the roof of the mouth, albeit a bad one. No one's suggesting you hard mew, I say all the time to just fix your head and oral posture. To suggest not to mew is to suggest to not do what your body's designed to do, it's like suggesting you shouldn't eat healthy, you shouldn't breathe, it's absolutely ridiculous.
