I Finally Felt it

Few days ago I woke up in the middle of the night and could not go back to sleep for a while. Aside from the time, the thing that caught my attention as I was trying to go back to sleep was the feeling in my maxilla especially around infra orbital rims.

It was a feeling unlike anything I experienced while awake. I noticed the same feeling on few occasions before, but never like this. It felt like my maxilla was radiating with soft pressure. After paying closer attention I noticed my tongue was plastered to my palate.

Not all of it though, only the front two thirds. It was plastered firmly but applying pressure gently. No effort on my part was required, expect for putting it there. When I removed my tongue the pressure feeling started reducing. When I put it back it came back slowly.

It's a really unique feeling. The more I think about the more I realize what's happening. I have been putting allot of effort recently into releasing my neck muscles and stretching them before going to sleep. I also managed to reduce the height of my pillow with no problems.

It seems the front and middle of my tongue is now reaching the palate and applying pressure throughout the night. The pressure builds up until it radiates throughout the maxilla. I think that is bone remodeling in action.

I am not surprised about this at all because 3 weeks ago I noticed a change under my eyes. The area was looking less hollow as if the infra orbital rims moved forward. It was a very small difference. Not worth stopping at but noticeable nonetheless. And it was not soft tissue. I know when my face swells with comfort or sinks with stress.

It all makes sense now: do all the work in the day so the tongue can do it's magic at night.

Sorry for being nit picky, but you don't feel anything in your maxilla. It's the muscles surrounding it that you feel. Good job though. I get the same feeling from under and beside my ears all the way down to the sides of my chin.

Good point, but it does not match what I am describing. I get the feeling you describe when I engage my posterior third. The mastication muscles subconsciously contract to close the teeth. Since they attach to the zygomatic arches that's where I feel their effort the most, just as you describe.

The feeling I am talking about here is different. In fact, it does not involve the posterior third or mastication muscles. I only have the front two thirds engaged against the palate. The feeling radiates all across the maxilla especially in the infra orbital rims area.

Have you changed your routine recently? have you been really focusing on any specific things like tongue postition or how hard your pushing? or have you just been consistent and now you see results

Good question. I mentioned one, which is that I have been releasing and stretching my tight neck muscles before going to sleep. Also, as a result I am able to sleep on a slimmer pillow, but there is more.

Recently, I started reducing the effort I am making in tongue posturing. For example previously I used to put constant effort in posturing the posterior third of my tongue. While I was successful in placing it there for long periods the effort felt unnatural for me. What I noticed after that is that my posterior third naturally goes up in that position after I do tongue chewing sessions, but will eventually drop.

I also stopped putting effort in placing the front of my tongue on the roof of my mouth. I just initiate the movement and let it do what it wants. Most often the first two thirds will just paste to palate on their own. I noticed this depends allot on several factors including if I have exercised my tongue, the position of my neck, and if my facial muscles are relaxed.

Speaking of which facial muscles really need to be relaxed when mewing. They really interfere with the ability of the tongue to posture and function (ex swallow). I think this is one area Dr. Mew can put more time explaining to people especially those who suffer from illnesses like, depression, anxiety, etc where they naturally tense all their muscles.

I think it';s the this gentle effort that is producing that unique feeling. When I used to hard mew I would get feelings in my bone but they were intense and annoying, not pleasant anyway.

At any rate I am still exploring this, I don't know since when I have been having this sensation, as it seems to only shows up when I wake up in the middle of the night.

how do u stretch?

This depends on which muscles are tight. For example, over the course of the past 1.5 years of forward head posture exercises I released most of my neck muscles except the levator scapulae. Now I am focusing on those.

Do you have forward head posture? Do you have tightness in your neck and limited range of motion when flex, extending, rotating, and or lateral flexing? This could tell you which muscles need releasing and stretching.
