Hello, I have a doubt concerning tongue rest.

Eventho I was engaging some of the posterior third already, I noticed I could do even more by doing kind of a vacuum far back in my throat, a tough succion. It feels a bit as if you were trying to "move back" your whole throat.

It also hurts my right jaw because things get strained. I wonder if I'm overdoing it or if it is the way to engage your posterior third. The fact that it's by doing a tough succion and Mike Mew mentionned that succion made me question about it.

Thanks

This is correct. Tongue suction gets the posterior tongue engaged and glued to the palate. As soon as you engage the posterior third your mastication muscles will engage and retract the mandible to a near closed position. That is how you know you are engaging the posterior third correctly.

This should not cause any pain. Do you have the pain in your jaw muscles or in the jaw joint?

Thank you for your answer.

I feel like I can really modulate the contraction, so I don't know which feeling I should aim for. I'm contracting just a bit now I guess "feels" and sensations will develop over time by themselves.

Yes I can feel my masseters engaging. Honestly I couldn't tell, but I have a bad history of pain in this TMJ especially. I originally had an "irreversible dislocation" which reversed, and I can feel the ramus and TMJ being way thinner and underdeveloped compared to the left side, so this explain the pain in my case. Since I had muscular AND joint pain AND also calficication I don't know whichone of those three causes pain.

Anyway I'll do it as much as it is possible for me, pain should get away with time.

what do you mean "I originally had an "irreversible dislocation" which reversed" reversed  in the sense that the displacement is now "solved" ?

Yep it is now solved. I can't give you more information because I actually don't know, I am just listening to the expert's diagnosis. It was initially for life, and after treatment they told me it actually wasn't since it has resolved.

Also - when I engage the whole posterior part, The front part don't touch the palate anymore. It is either one or the other.

What do you think about this ? Is it important to have both ? Did you go through the same situation as mine ?

I mean, I know it is important but the posterior part is a priority right ?
