I have had braces for a year and 2.5 months. I have had an overbite for years, and a very pushed back chin, bad enough that my bottom from teeth would touch the top of my mouth. With the progress that my braces have made so far, all of my gaps are closed and my teeth overlap less, though my top teeth hit my lower brakets which keep my back teeth from touching.
Now that I've spent a few days researching "mouth breathing" and correct toungue posture, I am pretty my bad posture is the cause of my overbite, considering neither of my parents have had braces and both have perfect teeth.
In an attempt to bring my maxilla forward, widen my palate and have a more defined face while I am still growing (I am 13) I have been mewing for a week. But I am very worried about my braces preventing this, I even making my recessed face worse. sadly, getting my braces off early is not an option for me; my mom wont even consider it. so here are my questions (sorry for the very excessive background)
1. Will my braces prevent me from making progress by mewing? I feel like my tongue just isn't enough to keep my teeth from being pushed back, but at the same time maybe correct tongue posture and braces could work together, the braces keeping my teeth strait while my maxilla is being pushed forward, bringing the teeth forward with it.
2: does proper tongue posture even if it can't change your face while wearing braces, at least prevent elongation and a narrowed palate? I have not had any extractions yet, so I feel like there I still hope.
thankyou so much to anyone who has taken the time to read and answer my questions! sorry for the length.
I have braces too. Mewing while having braces works just fine for me. Just wearing braces didn't change my face a lot, because my tongue posture and swallow habits were very bad. When i started mewing my face changed a lot faster and everything got a lot more defined, especially my jawline.
So, in my case it worked. It could be different in yours, maybe you should ask your orthodontist first.
Question 2 i cannot answer, but from what i've read correcting your tongue posture is never a bad idea.
