Hi!!! I started mewing a few months ago, but i also had a essix retainer (i had braces 4-5 months ago). Mike said that i shouldnt mew on the day and use my retainer on the night, so now i use my retainer all the day while mewing. However i also have a narrow palate and when i mew my tongue touches some of my teeth (the imw of first molars is 31 mm and second molars 40 mm).
Should I mew in this situation? Can my palate grow upwards but not expand? Can i achieve a counterclockwise rotation?
Im 16 btw
Thanks in advance!!! (English is not my first language so apologize me for any mistake.
I've been mewing for almost 2 years now (started at 21 turning 23 in December) and I have a decent amount of experience mewing with and without a retainer through trial and error. At first I started mewing and kept my top and bottom retainer on at night and did this for about 3 months and saw little to no noticeable progress. Then I started only wearing my bottom retainer at night but still saw minimal progress after about another 3-4 months. I stopped wearing my retainer entirely after that and saw a decent amount of progress (about 3-4mm expansion in inner molar width) after about 6 to 8 months. My bottom teeth have completely relapsed to pre braces crookedness and top teeth have relapsed a little bit but are still relatively straight.
My thoughts are that you will see noticeable and measurable progress if you continue to mew but your retainer will hinder your progress a lot. The tradeoff between not wearing your retainer and the state of your teeth does suck but personally I decided my facial aesthetics were more important than having perfectly straight teeth so I mewed without my retainer. Think carefully about what you decide to do because your teeth will relapse if you stop wearing your retainer at least from my experience.
