Over the last few months, I have kept going back to myself of mewing and posture and it’s connection to the human body. But I have determined that NASAL BREATHING 24/7 SUBCONSCIOUSLY is the ultimate key to Mewing .

THERE IS NO OTHER WAY BUT TO SAY THAT YOU GOT TO SPLIT THE MIDPALATAL SUTURE. IF YOU HAVE A VAULTED PALATE, YOU MUST SPLIT IT OR AT THE VERY LEAST LOOSEN THE SUTURE.

The tongue is capable on its own to split the suture as some people on the mewing subreddit and in this community. However, the reason they were able to do so was because they were able to achieve subconscious nasal breathing 24/7.

Think about this

080E05A7 6D65 4580 B0FB B78B145585F6

If your airways are small, then you will never establish nasal breathing SUBCONSCIOUSLY. It will still reoccur to the brain of a small airway thus tongue is in the airway. Which means you will have forward head posture to companste for not able to breathe into the nasal cavity efficiently.

An experiment that I’ve found to myself that reinstates my hypothesis that nasal breathing is the ultimate key than body posture is go look in the mirror and relax yourself for a while and leave your lips open. Then try to breathe through nose. You will notice an automatic lip seal, the mandible moved forward a bit to meet occlusion, the diaphragm being activated, the tongue being lifted to the palate and you will feel the occipital bone and chin tuck in slighty when you breathe through nose. However, most people can’t because a vaulted palate restricts the airflow efficiency and thins the nasal cavity size to take in air.

Also, I am aware that people will say that body and tongue posture also count. However, I will debunk this notion.

First: Babies are not aware of tongue posture but babies at rest are nasal breathers 24/7.
Think about it, what caused the babies to lose ability to have tongue posture is because they lost how to breathe through their nose. A baby getting its tonsils and adenoids removed during its few years in life is very detrimental to the baby because the tonsils and adenoids are supposed to be enlarge when getting an infection to help the immune system and not allowing to relax and force mouth breathing while leaving the baby to mouth breathe renforces mouth breathing on the baby. Not to mention that living indoors and allgeries cause that issue to. Breast feeding and swallowing pattern does have an effect but again swallowing has much less effect to the baby or adult compared to having the tongue up 24/7 due to nasal breathing.

2. THE HARVOLD MONKEY EXPERIMENT

I don’t have to be in depth but essentially that if the monkey fully grown developed mouth breathing by blocking their noses itself and caused deformities. Then the opposite must be true. Nasal breathing provided the monkey health to be fine. When they mouth breathe just by blocking their noses alone. It pretty much developed all health problems that modern humans have. Unfortunately, we don’t have an experiment of a deformed monkey of taught nasal breathing and seeing their faces changed or not. But think Myofunctional therapy providing evidence

3. the tongue is a muscle/ organ, breathing is an automatic/central nervous system function

We can always train our tongue to get strong, but can’t change our breathing due to the patterning of our central nervous system. The Central nervous system does not care about anything expect its own survival( the brain and spine) and standing erect. CHANGING STRUCTURE IS NESSCESSARY to change functional. Mike Mew idea of changing form changes function and vice verse should changing structure changing form changing function .

4. Lastly, nasal breathing encourages tongue posture and body posture

This ties with my last point but if the central nervous system has a compensation of the automatic nervous system(breathing, sleeping, digestion, etc). The body will follow. 90% of the brain activity is actually from sensory information from our senses. The other 10 percent is the output I.e posture, blood flow, hormone sercetion, etc. Nasal breathing forces Diaphragmatic breathing. Which causes prevent of forward head posture, pelvis stabilized, and many other things that I learned from Flobility to fix my body posture as Pillar principles.

Like this analogy

B3296ED9 20AF 418A 8C7B BE2233439088

These are my ideas and reasons after months of research in the Mewing and holistic mewing community that ultimately NASAL BREATHING SUBCONSCIOUSLY 24/7 IS THE REAL KEY TO MEWING.

I have a hard time believing mouth breathing is as prevalent as some people try and suggest; I've never had a problem breathing through my nose and that hasn't changed in the 5 years of various things I've done to try and get changes; I'd probably say a very minute change has happened or possibly nothing that wouldn't have happened anyway (like the reduction of facial subcutaneous fat from getting older making me look more rugged, as if my cheekbones actually got stronger).

Mouth breathing is hidden by the lip seal and head posture. If I saw someone nose breathing, I would have to see someone breathing by their diaphragm and see their neck muscles not moving when their inhale. Mouth breathing is very unnoticed by the General public by sealing their lips that they think they are nasal breathing, which they are not and if you notice any level forward head posture. Then most likely they have a habit of mouth breathing

Have you any evidence that someone can breath through their mouth even with lips closed? This seems like a nightmare, omg.

@serbian No, it’s impossible to breathe through your mouth with your lips closed. I am referring to the mentalis muscle. That they are sealing their lips improperly because they are using the mentalis instead of the lip oris muscle and tongue to seal their lips. Often times people who close theirs lips with the mentalis are mouth breathers at rest. Even I have this issue myself.

I am referring a lip seal like this

Basically what you do here is take the result and turn it into the cause.

People with bad development do not close their mouth properly (what you call "improper nasal breathing").

This is not a cause but a result. Like you mentioned, someone who has bad development can not do "proper nasal breathing".

Mixing up causes and results is a big issue in this forum's reasoning.

Also, unlike what you mentioned, nobody here actually managed to split their suture with their tongue forces alone. At least nobody proved that.

- Age: 30
- Started soft mewing on 12 Feb 2019. Have not seen any real results or changes.
- Starting IMW: 35 mm
- Current IMW: 35 mm
- I now believe that mewing is mostly snake oil at least for the purposes discussed on this forum.

@wellwellwell

I understand from that persecptive. But even then, people who got surgery and still got relapse is because of lacking tongue posture and but more importantly establishing the habit of nasal breathing.

There was a video of Ronald Ead talking about a guy who got double jaw surgery and still relapsed even he was trying to mewing was because he couldn’t establish nasal breathing 24/7.

Also I mean in a adult situation when lack of nasal breathing is the cause of their problems. In children, both tongue posture and nasal breathing are necessary.

However in a adult from years lacking tongue posture because they can’t breathe through their nose is the result. I said to myself that we need to change structure before changing form and function.

If you lack the space to breathe through nose because of a vaulted palate then you splitting the mid palatal suture is your option. Some people can Mew with enough tongue space through oral volume but still can’t breathe through their nose 24/7 because they lack nasal volume due a vaulted palate.

And for any adult I agree that MSE and face mask is best for lateral and forward growth of the maxilla and mandible since the mandible will meet the maxilla through occlusion.

The healthy airway is capable of taking in a lot more air volume from the nasal passages, and in general. Very deep breathing and heavy breathing should not be restricted by the nasal passages and sinuses at all.

Multiple parts of the body can be looked at as functioning diaphragms

I agree with that statement, the airway is very large at its full capcity but most people suffer from small jaws and forward head posture.

There are multiple parts of the body that are actually diaphragms. We actually have 2 more diaphragms in the pelvis as the pelvic floor and in the thorax as many people know of. However, most people don't know how to breathe in those areas as our structure depends on the CNS( Central Nervous System) to know what the body is doing subconciously. The pelvis and skull are very connected to the spine. Yet I've often see people with a pooch in the belly when a person is hunched over. This is due to a lack of IAP( Intra Abdominal Pressure) where the core is very flaccid and causes lots of stability, mobility, flexibility, agility, balance, cordination, and other things to have massive problems over time. The best way to train your core and gain IAP is making your TVA ( transverse abdomins) stronger .Doing the abs walk and stomach vacuums is a good start but to have real adaptions is mainly breathwork with yoga. But to a disclaimier this process is very long and requires lots of dedication and hard work to resolve the foundation of good posture at the start of your spine. Any change to the skull will change the spine and vice versa and will take years of this process to change.

Another benefit of consistent nasal breathing is that it increase simulation of the Vagus nerve and possibly increasing resting Vagal tone levels. Having a high Vagal tone means that your body is able handle stress better and activates the parasympathetic nervous system strongly as "good stress" like relaxing breathing. Michael Jordan has great facial development as you can see and everytime he sticks his tongue means that activating stability and calmness with his mind and body. That could be the reason he was very clutch but maybe Vagal tone is another part of having that is needed from consistent nasal breathing to improve facial development.
