I originally asked this in the discordapp group under the name BNF, but I'm now able to post here so I'll carry on the discussion here.
I've been mewing + chewing (I chew mastic gum for 2 hours, sometimes 4, a day) for over a year now. The first 6 months I got great results, ramus grew downwards, maxilla moved up and forwards and my intermolar distance went from 39mm to approx. 45/46mm (our ancient ancestors had 52mm according to Mew, which is what I want). However for the last 6 months or so I've carried on the mewing and chewing but gotten no further results. I mew 24/7 (though my nighttime posture could be improved, I do notice when I wake up my tounge is where it should be but my teeth are a few mm apart).
I have a canted maxilla (one side is more recessed than the other, giving me a slanted smile), one side of my palate is wider than the other (I'd probably have around 48/49mm intermolar distance if they were equal) and one ramus longer than the other. Also my chin is still slightly recessed so I'm confident I haven't just completely corrected myself and that no more progress is to be made. The use of a biobloc appliance was suggest to me in the discord group but I'm unsure where to get that done (I'm in the UK, to my knowledge mew is the only person who uses this in the country, if anyone can correct me on that please do).
I'm far from opposed to the biobloc, in fact I'd be quite up for it, but my problem is finding someone who will treat me with it, as well as the fact it only fixes one of my issues, does anyone have any additional advice they can give? I had a consultation with Mew shortly before I began all of this but he wasn't taking adult patients at the time, I checked his website today and it seems he might be taking on people who he had previously seen and who made an improvement, but that's pretty much my only lead at the moment.
Anyway love to hear your thoughts.
tl;dr: made good progress for 6 months, then no further results for 6 months, want to know how I can go back to making gains
A few ideas:
Cheers for the response, I experimented with mewing 'more' on either side of my palate and from what you describe it does appear the side I think is weaker is indeed. When I press more on that side than the other I certainly feel more strain on the skull as opposed to when I repeat the same exercise on the other side. How can I go about realigning these muscles to the correct position then? Just press more on the weaker side of my palate until it catches up?
In regards to palate width, I'm not convinced 49mm would be my maximum. On my stronger side it still appears there's 2-3mm of expansion to go as I can see my bottom row of teeth at the sides of that half would be much better aligned if only the palate were wider (I've already seen evidence of this from the expansion I've already gotten). What I'm aiming for is the palate of the ancient skull shown in mew's museum trip video, but I'm not quite there yet in either flatness nor width.
Also do you have any advice on how to keep my teeth together whilst I sleep? Oh and I'll provide pics of my mid and lower thirds when I get the chance.
What do you mean by 49 mm being his "full potential?" Id imagine that constant pressure to the maxilla would continue to cause bone growth. Its not like osteoclasts and osteoblasts "know' when to ignore pressure changes. Perhaps due to the new shape of his face he simply needs to apply different vectors of force with his tongue to see continued changes.
I say all this because facial skeletal structure can change drastically from a tumor or growth under the bone into a completely deformed shape, so don't see why the bone would stop changing once its "done"

Focusing on the weaker side is a good step to begin with. As for keeping teeth together during sleep, some sleep with the jaw against their fist, others try to keep their heads tucked in in a way that pushes the mandible against maxilla.

I am referring to sutural growth. The bones of the skull are in complex dynamic relationship with each other. It is unlikely that you will be able to keep on expanding forever without encountering resistance from the rest of the skull. Beyond sutural growth, bone remodelling is certainly still possible. But it is also a significantly slower process.
Have you started fixing your posture for the rest of your body? If the muscles of your head and neck and tight then they will hold the bones in place. So your tongue is pushing out but maybe tense neck muscles and reigning the whole thing back in
I am the exact same issue of a canted maxilla, however i am currently in braces which are due to come off very soon. @canted have you had any more progress?
@Progress, you seem very knowledgeable in this area. I too have what feels like a canted maxilla (one side of the roof of my mouth feels lower when i press my tongue on it) on this lower side, my lips, cheekbones and eyes are lower too. I am extremely worried as my orthodontist refuses to acknowledge any of this. my braces are due to come off soon, ive been mewing with braces for months and am considering not wearing any retainers atall once my braces come off so i can correctly mew.
If your ortho recommends a Hawley retainer, ask for another option as those just hold everything in place and don't allow tongue force to be applied since they cover the area where your tongue would be.
Now, I would focus on things like chin tucking, pulling back your occiput, keeping your shoulders back and your chest high. No slouching. The straighter you make your posture, the straighter your posture will become.
Braces can't fix canted smiles since canted smiles aren't caused by tooth position but maxillary tilt and braces can't tilt your maxilla. Check your face and see if you favor one side over the other in terms of muscle tensing. I have tensed the left side of my face for over 30 years and just recently realized I was doing that so I stopped. I noticed my left side of my lip had a tendency to a somewhat smirk when I looked closely. So I relaxed that left side and immediately some of the asymmetry was corrected. However the tensed muscle put grams of force for decades on my maxilla which is why it pushed it sideways and canted my smile. At least now the muscle force is gone so the problem can't get worse.
"braces can't tilt your maxilla", braces with elastics pull the maxilla back and down
