Anyone here have an anterior open bite? Or had? What’s your experience in the world of orthotropic?
I’ve an anterior open bite, and the orthotropic practice — yes, orthotropic practice/Was a fan of Mew — near me has used that as grounds to delay an appliance.
Rationale: open bites.. based on the model of moving the maxilla up, and then having the mandible upswing..
Well the open bite means the front teeth are further forward already, so that the palatal expansion would exacerbate this in a way that the mandible won’t be able to compensate for.
In part due to being class 1 makes it so that at some point the position of the lower jaw molars and mandible can’t compensate for the distance created by the top without surgery! Paraphrasing.
Which makes me go wtf a little bit.
I heard them out. Kept a straight face about it all. Either I’ll be patient or I’ll get my own appliance. I’ll continue with posture and Myofunctional for now.
I’m proceeding with myo. My therapist has some success with improving anterior open bite, when I asked.
That’s my focus. Posture. Mew. Hard Mew. Myo. Improve.
I seem to remember Dr. Mew saying in some of his videos that an anterior open bite often develops with his pediatric patients as part of the orthotropic process from tongue thrusting as they train to keep their tongues on the roof of their mouths, but that it corrects itself as the maxilla moves up and forward and the tongue has more space to stay away from the incisors. I'm not sure how generalizable this is to adult patients, but maybe your anterior open bite would correct itself with adequate tongue space. Is this what people are referring to when they talk about a period after they start mewing when they develop a ducklike appearance for a few months from what I assume is tipping of their upper incisors due to tongue pressure until the maxilla expands and moves forward enough that the tongue is no longer in contact with the teeth and the pressure of the lips realigns the teeth? I haven't experienced this transition myself during the year+ that I have been mewing, but I think this is because I am able to keep my tongue behind the incisive papilla.
You are correct about Mew’s explanation.
My understanding was that, yes, the teeth do angle tip forwards as the mewing process goes underway.
Difficulty in this case case stems from... ive no way of knowing certainty whether my current bite is from mewing progression, or from the habitual malfunctioning!
Well information to pass on.
In this case, the anterior open bite is attributed to that spoken about mentalis activation, shortened upper lip, and weak orbicularis muscles, as an observed certainty.
Tongue thrust, swallow patterns might play into it sure. Certainly in the past!
Moving forward. Retraining the muscles.
Working on maintaining proper seal is necessary. breathing through nose, keeping tongue on roof of mouth, and maintaining seal is necessary. Time to up that patakara use. 4 mins/up to 5x a day
On that note, now this topic Is morphing a bit. My nose breathing is made difficult by environmental factors
question. I’ve seasonal allergies or inflammation that I’ve yet to solve the underlying problem. Plus the side where the maxillae is lower has poor nostril airflow. But he main issue is congestion from the environment
Anyone have similar seasonal issues they resolved without OTC meds?
I’m utilizing ACV. Looking into anti-inflammatory lifestyle. Diet. Micronutrients! Breathing patterns.
Even things like aggressive dusting, washing, cleaning of your living space may be important. I both advise all those, as well as ask for those with difficulty and ask for anyone’s personal solution. No OTC meds tho! Ha

When my allergies are bad or I have a cold, I use a netti pot and it seems to help alleviate some of the inflammation of my nasal/pharyngeal mucosa.
