Short frenulum but not tongue tied?

Hi everyone,

Like many others, I was so grateful to stumble across Mike Mew's work after being dissatisfied with my melted face, before and after extraction/braces.  Right now, it's my teeth crowding (big relapse), small/pursed mouth, unattractive lips and a lot of teeth showing even when the lips are only slightly apart that I dislike the most.  I'm self-conscious to even talk to people these days because they seem to stare at my mouth and grin.

Mewing hasn't helped so far, however.  Although, I think I have a posterior tongue tie because  my tongue can't reach the palate when my mouth's wide open, causing the tip to become heart-shaped with the strain, even though I can eat/speak okay.

So, I saw an ENT surgeon about it.  After showing him my tongue/moving it around etc., he proceeded to put a camera into my nose and down my throat.....to check for adenoids!  It was nice to know that I don't have any, but it wasn't the reason for me being there.  He then showed me the back of my throat on the screen and declared that there was no tongue tie! Was he expecting to find it near my tonsils?!  Guess he either took 'posterior' tongue tie a bit too literally, or he just wasn't in the mood to do his job properly.  After I told him that the issue was under my tongue (who'd have thought!)  he rolled his eyes at me before admitting that my frenulum was short, but a 'variation of what's normal'.

I paid up and left his office, feeling deflated.  Not just because of the stinging, unnecessary procedure, but because I was so convinced that this was the root cause of my problems, only to feel like I'm back at square one.  However, was he right to say that I'm not tongue tied, after all?  Could this mean that my tongue is normal but that it can't reach the palate due to too much mandibular downswing, or a high vault arch? But, surely the maxilla would downswing to match? Perhaps the ENT was wrong and I need a second opinion, but I'm worried I'll be treated like an idiot again. Is there anyone here who's had a frenectomy  for their 'short frenulum' and did it make a difference? Were there complications?  Even Mike seems unsure about them right now, according to his vids...

Thank you for reading this btw

Maybe seek out the opinion of a myofunctional therapist. Tongue tie is not an all or nothing proposition, so maybe your frenulum is marginally short, but not to the extent that this ENT would recommend surgery. Whereas a myofunctional therapist might be better able to say if your frenulum restricts your tongue from achieving correct oral posture.
