If one were to use a headgear to protract the maxilla, what should be the vector of the elastic pull (to the occlusal plane) if a purely forward movement is desired?  Most studies on maxillary protraction involve a downward and forward movement of the maxilla, rather than just purely forward movement, and because of that there is a clockwise rotation of the mandible.

Generally, -30 degrees to the occlusal plane for pure forward movement. Of course point of force application matters too.

Thank you for this.  I have attached a diagram to this comment.  Would -30 degrees to the occlusal plane of force application achieve #1 or #2 on the diagram?  If it is #1, how would one achieve something like #2?

#1

#2 achievable through remodeling of existing bone mass over time

@ varbrah

So if one wanted that kind of movement in #2 they would probably have to protract -15 degrees to parallel to the occlusal plane (According to FEM models)?
