Why all the hate for jaw surgery?

I noticed lots of people here despise jaw surgery. As far as i know it's the only way to move bone and to correct severe over/underbites. Mike Mew suggests jaw surgery in severe cases.

I get that jaw surgery is invasive and the recovery is not easy. But it's the most effective and tested way to correct severe under-/overbites.

There are some beautiful results!  Spectacular video at https://youtu.be/yFPwOM8Azzc

Risks include death (as with all anesthesia).  Check out this cutie, done by Dr. Juan-Carlos Quintero:

There's a lot to be said for finding someone you trust and letting them do their job.

By the way - I hardly am on this site anymore.  There are many who just are very stanch about "Mewing" while I think it's been pretty established that it can cause problems.

I have nothing against it, i just dont think what this forum is for.

Im planning on eventually getting surgery myself. But im witholding it some years, because for now i want to see what facial upswing i can see trough mewing and maybe eventually face pulling if i decide on it.

Maybe i'll see some midface shortening eventually if im lucky, but there is no surgical procedure that'll shorten your midface, so im mewing for now.

My surgeon said that about 300 jaw surgeries happen every 1 (or 2) year(s) at his hospital. He's also the head surgeon and many orthodontists refer to his practice for jaw surgeries. I'll also make sure that i'm up to date on his analysis prior to surgery and what he will be planning to do.

"There are many who just are very stanch about "Mewing" while I think it's been pretty established that it can cause problems."   What do you mean by "it"? mewing?

Well i'm kind of in the same boat. Jaw surgery has its limits as it does not move the whole maxilla but only the lower part. Aesthetically i think my midface is fine as it is though i asked my ortho for a cephalometric analysis and i'll check everything.

Ideal for me would be if i managed to move my maxilla up and forwards myself in one year so i'd only need lower jaw surgery. Wonder if that's possible. I'm 22. Braces might help me mewing as i have a bit of crowding in my teeth.

I see that but cant you move most of the maxilla upwards trough a lefort 2 tough? Lefort 3 is to risky.

But i dont think you'll be able to see results in the span of one year tho, unless your maybe hardmew or facepull with the phremise of you having a wide palate.

My midface is kinda long. Its not abnormally long, type david schwimmer range. But its above average in lenght. Sadly tough it doesn't harmonize well with the rest of my face so im really hoping to see some facial upswing/shortening.

I don't think they do lefort 2 for aesthetic reasons. And if so i don't think it's worth it, it's even more invasive than lefort 1.

Where are you now @darkindigo? You were making a blog if I am not mistaken?

Bingo, and lefort 1 hardly addresses the mid face deficiency. Frankly with the results of FAGGA what's the point of lefort 1 surgery? The airway will open beautifully with a treatment that lasts no more than 6-8 months plus braces.

It seems that the FAGGA can only bring the maxilla forwards but not upwards. It would result in a longer face if your maxilla is downswung like mine.

This video is incorrect. He makes allot of unsubstantiated claims. He was called on them many time and did not respond. Several of them are on the FAGGA main thread including this one:

Hi everyone, I've made a video analysing the effectiveness of FAGGA.

In short, the verdict is that it does potentially cause downwards growth as well due to the orientation of the maxilla.

Please give it a watch! This should answer most of your questions.

You make an interesting theoretical point but where is the evidence to back it?

Most of the pictures and x-rays are used to illustrate the difference between downward and forward growth. The only picture I saw that clearly shows a longer face comes from Ronny and we know that is the case because of the pads on his molars.

Also, what are all the lines and measurements you are making? I never seen them in any professional presentation. Do you have reference for them that I can check? Also, it does not look you established the level of the head on any of those pictures. Without that you can't distinguish between facial growth and head tilting.

It just doesn't seem you have enough empirical evidence to come to that conclusion.

The one good thing I find in your video is that it might force the team behind this appliance to come out with more feedback.
