www.migrainehacks.com is the guy above.

Lee mentioned that one of the cases in the thread about the FAGGA appliance is from a blog called migrainehacks.com. I've scanned through the site. He is committed to correct oral and body posture, and an advocate for the FAGGA system, but the post I found most interesting was about his earlier attempt at palate expansion with a removable acrylic expander ( https://www.migrainehacks.com/new-blog-1/2018/2/3/failed-attempt-at-adult-palatal-expansion ). It sounds like he was being treated by Dr. Kent Lauson, the orthodontist from Colorado whom I mentioned in the success stories thread. I suspect some of his side effects got as bad as they did because he was being treated remotely, flying in from Massachusetts for his appointments, and he doesn't say how frequently he saw Dr. Lauson, but this still reflects badly on the doctor's practice. They fitted him with an upper and lower expander, and his upper expander had sagital expansion screws in addition to the transverse screw.

My upper and lower acrylic palate expanders, called sagittal appliances. These expanders failed.

He says that he was expanding at a rate of 1/4mm per week on all of the screws, and he quotes Dr. Lauson's book saying "slow palatal expansion (only about one activation of 1/4 millimeter per week) is the most physiologic and ideal stimulation for midface/palatal expansion...slow activation stimulates the differentiation of stem cells located within the sutures to form osteoblasts, leading to true bone formation." In my novice opinion, this is a little too slow for the upper transverse expansion, which separates the midpalatal suture, and too fast for the mandibular and sagital expansion, which can only occur through bone remodeling. It sounds like he was diligently following instructions, but I don't know why he didn't stop or adjust his strategy before the teeth tipping, and gum recession got as bad as they did. He says that he expanded the lower screw 7mm and all three of the upper screws by 6.5mm. You can follow the link above for more images, but I'll paste a few here:

Front teeth flaring in sockets.Upper molars flaring outward, and nasty sores along their base.Permanent gum loss (the discolored triangle at the base of this upper molar)

So for anyone out there attempting unsupervised palate expansion: don't let it get anywhere near this situation! It looks like he mostly got in trouble with anterior teeth tipping on the top because of the sagital expansion, and his lower incisors separated so much because he was spacing out the intercanine distance. His molars don't look as badly tipped, but they had significant gum recession. So I think anyone with a y-plate expander or the modified stretching plate, or something similar should altogether avoid turning the screws that expand sagitally. I also think that a mandibular expander should be turned much slower and only to the point that lingually tipped teeth are uprighted and any anterior crowding is alleviated, but not to the point that you get these kinds of gaps between the incisors. He also doesn't mention anything about chewing exercises, which can help prevent teeth tipping and maintain proper occlusion. In fact he says that chewing was painful, which should have been a warning sign that he was getting mostly dental movements.

He also reports that his "Upper inner gums became white with infected soars due to extreme pressure and irritation from the appliances." If you start to get sores on your mucosal surface like he reports, I think it is wise to let them heal and accept that you might have some regression. That is the situation I am in currently with an ulcer over my upper left first molar. I'm going to wait a few days and then resume, appreciating that I might have to wind back the screw several turns. No appliance is going to get you all the way to your goal, but I still think they can help us get more tongue space to be able to better maintain correct oral posture for the long run. Set realistic expectations about what you are trying to achieve, and adjust your strategy if something is causing problems rather than senselessly pushing ahead.

He also mentioned that he stopped chewing gum in mid 2017 because it lead to one of his molars cracking.

Jelly about how forward his maxilla is compared to mine (serious). But other than that hope he has a speedy recovery and can regress to teeth together

Nice post, definitely an interesting case and an interesting website. Looks like he is really putting a lot of good info out there. I'm going to take some time to read it over so that I can keep up with what is going on.

Acrylic expanders aren't ideal, for sure. That's why I always planned to use mine as more of a retainer than anything else. Also Mew and Dr. Lauson seem to use different expansion rates. Anyways, now we wait to find out if the FAGGA device is any better or if it's just more of the same. I'll spend some time looking into it more deeply.

His main goal is correcting his tongue posture to help relieve headaches. You can find his blog here: www.migrainehacks.com

Just wondering in this guys case he got his premolars out.  What would he have to do to open space for the missing teeth?  His maxilla looks good width.  Where would the space be created?

True he does not need space to realign crowded teeth, but he can use it to move his tongue forward expanding his airway and, more importantly in his case, to reduce his forward head posture which is contributing to his migraine.

No I was just curious as to how would he go on with opening space for premolars taken out?  I had upper premolars taken out and wondering if the tongue could open up those spaces?

He mentions on his blog that he hasn't decided yet if he is going to put implants into the gaps they open up where his extracted bicuspids should be or if he is going to complete the "controlled arch" phase of the treatment that shifts all of the back teeth forward to fill the gaps.

People, you need to be careful with what you're doing to your body. These websites where we are so critical of our own faces, it's so very toxic for our self esteem. This poor man, has damaged himself. He has cracked his molar, he has ruined his teeth, he torn his gums (they don't heal btw, they are mucosal tissue, not skin). This man, in search for better health, has made himself worse, and he probably feels awful for it. Please ask yourself, "What do I want out of all this ? " ... Because, I imagine there isn't one person on this forum who truly cares about their outside beauty. Most people are here because they feel lonely, sad, unhealthy. They feel unbeautiful on the inside.

And I would say when people go to the extreme. When people take matters into their own hands. They often feel suicidal. They rummage away, "well, if I mess myself up, who cares?! I will just kms!" They think "either I live a HEALTHY life, or I live no life at all."

Seeing a post like this is depressing, but sometime it's best to withdraw from our current mindset and experience something else. https://youtu.be/4UclTjsLAOc Like this for example.

Experimenting on ourselves like Guinea pigs is dangerous and selfish. Having hope the adult skull can change, when there is solid logic that it CAN'T without DAMAGE means nothing to someone who is so strung out on a limb that they are blinded by chance. "What if I'm the exception" is often a dangerous way to think. Have a kid, we already know so much, give your kid the maxilla you wish you had. And die knowing you fulfilled your genetic obligation. Paraplegics are happiest when they see their kids running around. Blind people are happiest when they hear their kids can see. And Mewers are happiest when we see our kid as beautiful, popular, and attractive.

Giving someone else, what we wish we had is the true way to happiness. Living for yourself is pleasure, living for others is happiness. Decide what matters to you .. 😊

@mewmouse500, there are a lot of good thoughts there, but also be sure to gain a little context. The migrainehacks guy wasn't self experimenting, he was flying across the country to a certified healthcare provider to help him resolve a debilitating medical condition. In effect, his mouth was damaged by following his doctor's advice. Some of the people on here have real medical needs that are not adequately addressed by the medical providers that they have access to. You can see ronaldead.com for more info on the subject in the photos.
