Hello everyone,
My first post here is to just highlight my situation and to ask some questions. I'm 22, with several 'problems' as outlined in this community - narrow palate, tongue tie, weak jaw, etc.
I went to a Myofunctional therapist who conveniently practices 5 minutes from where I live. I paid a not-so-modest consultation fee and she took measurements and analysed what was wrong with my craniofacial development and came up a full assessment which can be found here. Also below, if that doesn't work.
To be fair, it is quite detailed and informative. Her final price for a year of sessions with her was priced at about £1,500, adding on to that I'll need to pay the price of appliances used to help expand my palate. She also believed I needed tongue-tie removal with a laser, as well as seeing an orthodontist who can fit a palatal expander, both of these would also cost money on top.
I'm poor. I also consulted my parents who believe the thing is bullshit as I had only gone to the myofunctional therapist after going to the dentist about a crown. The OMT therapist was there at the dental practice and recommended I go for a consultation with her. They think it's all a way to get more money out of me, and it did feel like the therapist went to efforts to detail what is wrong with me and it made me feel further like I have things that are wrong with me that I need to fix.
My question to you, good people - is this thing all for real? Are we all just convinced there's something wrong with our faces because of our insecurities? Would it actually be worth me spending this money, which I would need a credit card for, to do this? I can pay the money back with my new job, but I don't want to increase my debt.
Can I actually do all the things she recommends by myself and save the money? I'm willing to put the work in and implement this into my lifestyle if palatal expansion is possible with just posture. Of course, like anyone, i want to look better and be healthier.
I took a look at the reommended treatments at the end of the pdf. Everything apart from getting your tongue tie released is DIY-able if you are up for it. Posture you can fix at home. Myofunctional exercises you can find on youtube. Palate expander you can order online. The matter is thus more about whether or not you trust yourself enough to figure out the steps you need to take in order to improve your situation. Since your palate is so narrow, you may find it very difficult to widen it without an appliance, but it's not impossible. Should you succeed, you would certainly notice an improvement in not just looks, but posture, breathing and overall body mechanics too.

Answer is yes, it's all real and it's proven to be real. Your parents are probably uneducated on the subject and just like 90% of the people in the world probably don't give a flying fux about health, let alone different and less known ways of achieving it. Your an adult and you should make your own decisions without thinking about other peoples opinions. If you think it's going to be good for you it's probably because it will be. In my opinion, it's definitely something you need. Maybe you aren't suffering with anything that's too bad right now but, think about it. Maybe in 10 years you'll regret it, or even sooner.
Unfortunately almost everything has a price these days, including our health. It's your money and it's your choice. But look at money as a tool in your life. Look at life like a game. Consider this an upgrade to your character so it can make more money and make more upgrades.
I'm a hardcore DIYer but i know my limits. You should also know yours. I certainly know when i need and am going to benefit from some extra help and knowledge and i think you would.
You re going to learn body posture habits, tongue posture habits, frenectomy is super important, especially in your case. You have no dental problems and deviations. Most likely you will see good things happening.
Ask the therapist if you can maybe pay in increments? That'd be good init?
Some poeple won't agree with me here and that's aight but they're probably in this forum and they're stuck in the mud because they don't get help and they also don't trust and value other peoples work.
I say do it. They're professionals who will help you tremendously. Youll get far more support and better results then if you stay in doubt. I see people online who don't know what proper oral posture is and have been at it for months. Youll also make contacts and connect with new people that can potentially help you in the future.
As for the insecurities part dude. Everyone is insecure. Share those insecurities with other people. Go and get them fixed. That's what makes you evolve as a person.
Forget insecurity, this is your health that is at stake here. As someone ten years your elder with mounting health problems, I wish I had known about all this at your age. Whichever route you decide to go, I urge you not to pass the problem off merely as an insecurity. There are strong correlations between beauty and health, so don't let anyone tell you that this is simply a case of vanity.
Do you mind me asking how much you paid to consult with the Myofunctional Therapist you visited? I'm near London and am considering doing the same.
Cheers, and good luck.
I think the immense benefit to your physical health and general quality of life going through with this will provide is invaluable. I'd definitely get the treatment done as long as the myofunctional therapist is reputable.
